Vol. 3, Issue 1 | September 2019
Message from the Superintendent
Dear HUSD Community,

I had the pleasure of splitting my time on the first day of school between Hayward and San Diego. In Hayward, I helped welcome Harder students to their temporary campus at the former Cherryland site. Students from kindergarten through 6th grade arrived ready to learn in this new space. I also helped welcome students to the new Cherryland campus as students stepped foot in their classrooms there for the first time.

In San Diego, I joined our HUSD team at the Convening of District-Community Partnerships for Learner-Centered Education , organized by Big Picture Learning, PBL Works, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The purpose of the convening is to support several California-based school district-community partnerships, in learning together and creating a shared vision for delivering equity-focused, learner-centered environments for students and adults. Our team includes a teacher, a parent, administrators, and a school board member.

I look forward to our work together this year and I encourage you to connect with me at the various community meetings planned for this year. You will also hear continuous updates from me throughout the year regarding the implementation of our strategic plan.

Thank you for your partnership.

Sincerely,
Matt Wayne, Ed.D.
Superintendent

More Than a Meal
School lunch is critical to student health and well-being and ensures that students have nutrition they need throughout the day to learn. Research shows that receiving free or reduced-price school lunches reduces food insecurity, obesity rates, and poor health. In addition, the new school meal nutrition standards are having a positive impact on student food selection and consumption, especially for fruits and vegetables. Schools and families benefit with every application completed. Remember that any information you include in this application IS NOT shared with any other agency. Your information is private and confidential.
FREE AC Transit passes for students
Middle and high school HUSD students may be eligible to receive a free Student Transit Pass for unlimited, free access to AC Transit bus services as well as a 50% discount on BART trips and youth discounts on other transit systems
HUSD transitioning to electronic reporting
HUSD has moved to electronic reporting for state mandated tests. In three easy steps parents/guardians have 24/7 access to student information.
Bond Program Update
We're excited to share updates on projects that were completed over the summer.

Winton Middle School and Treeview Elementary had their roofs replaced and the exterior of their buildings were painted.

Longwood Elementary, Ruus Elementary, Glassbrook Elementary, Treeview Elementary, and Ochoa Middle School all had their fire alarm/public address/clock systems replaced.

Eden Gardens and Lorin Eden had their roofs replaced.

Many more projects are in the planning phase, so stay tuned for news on additional projects. These projects were made possible thanks to the support from the Hayward community through Measure H. THANK YOU!

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow
Missing just 2 days a month means a child misses 10% of the school year! Too many absences—excused or unexcused—can keep students from succeeding in school and in life.
