Dale Selover

Director of the House Next Door

Dear Beloved Community,

There are a lot of changes happening in my family in the upcoming weeks and months. My husband, Peter, is retiring on June 14 after forty years of ministry; and our daughter, Sara, is marrying her fiancé, Nevin, in September. So much joy…so much to celebrate! Lots of changes…and transitions.

Transitions have always been challenging for me. It takes me a while to shift gears and to process. I would guess that is true for most of us. My mind is going a mile a minute as we plan for both of these celebrations and as I anticipate the changes that both of these life events will bring.

When I was sharing all that is on my mind with my best friend, Elaine, she wisely said: Why don’t you put aside all of your lists and all of your worries, so that you can just be present to Peter and to Sara and to these wonderful celebrations? Sometimes the spiritual director needs to be the directee.

The spiritual practice of letting go and releasing is crucial if we are to be present to the people and events around us. Perhaps you are stepping into a season of change or are anticipating a time of transition. We are all about to experience a new season with the arrival of summer. What are you being invited to lay down, to put aside? What do you need to release and let go that you might be present to yourself and to God?

I pray you every blessing and a summer filled with moments of sabbath rest.

With love,

Dale

Washing with water and anointing with oil, women’s hands have blessed human bodies with their touch for centuries. So did Mary when she anointed Jesus for his burial. So did Jesus when he washed his friends’ feet in the Upper Room.

What are our own experiences with water and oil, with cleansing and consecrating bodies? How has our touch conveyed the love and life of the Spirit?
