THE HUMANE HAND:

A resource for developing careful and confident livestock handlers in meat plants.

2024 Recap:

Humane Handling Institute’s Notable Accomplishments

The Humane Handling Institute had a busy 2024! Some things we are most proud of include:

  • Hiring Dr. Karly Anderson as a Scientist and Trainer. Dr. Anderson is a leading expert in captive bolt stunning of livestock.
  • Employing ten undergraduate students, deeply affecting career aspirations and inspiring interest in the meat industry.
  • Hosting the annual in-person Meat Institute Animal Welfare Committee meeting.
  • Publishing the first peer-reviewed journal article on captive bolt placement for domesticated yaks.
  • Conducting the first cranial anatomy of bison study, resulting in stun placement recommendations.
  • Investigating the relationship between liver abscesses, hoof disorders, and congestive heart failure in fed cattle.
  • Completing studies to guide captive bolt placement and understand penetration depth needed for mature bulls, beef cows, Holstein cows and fed cattle.
  • Receiving funding from the American Meat Science Association to provide workshop scholarships for 30 out-of-state trainees.
  • Being awarded a grant from The Kinder Ground Foundation to subsidize travel costs for out-of-state trainees.
  • Hearing multiple success stories from plants and trainees that attended our workshops, confirming the impacts of our work together.
