THE HUMANE HAND:

A resource for developing careful and confident livestock handlers in meat plants.

HHI RECEIVES STUNNING GIFT FROM VALUED SUPPORTER

Denise Perry, Ph.D. (second from right) consultant for the meat industry, meat science professional, and valued animal welfare supporter recently combined career with creative passions to create a beautiful gift for HHI to display in their classroom space.

Perry shared, “I have always been drawn to the front end of the process from animal handling through harvest. The employees have such a critical role in the delicate and stark process of converting muscle to meat. The skill, compassion and empathy required of these employees are often very misunderstood or mischaracterized by the outside world. Because of this, the handlers and slaughter floor employees I have managed over the years were my inspiration for the quote and overall theme of the (stained glass) project. There is a true harmony of contrasts that exist when it comes to humane handling and slaughter.”

“I have always loved art as an enjoyable hobby that allows me to tap into my more creative side,” said Perry. Her interest in glass began after purchasing a 1909 Craftsman-style home that featured a built-in hutch with stained glass. Perry learned the craft by reading, observing and “a whole lot of trial and error.”

The gift to HHI features hybridized stained glass,

a technique Perry has been working with for five years.
