September 07, 2026 / Robert S. Hyer Elementary School

Dear Hyer Families,

I hope you thoroughly enjoyed the long weekend; it was a nice way to refresh after the hustle of starting the school year. Our kids are doing great and have effortlessly adapted to the transition of being back in school after summer break. The staff and I are so proud of the work our students are doing and the way they show kindness and respect towards each other and the staff.

Skyward Family Access

This is HPISD’s online student information portal for parents and guardians. Families can use Skyward to access important student information, including attendance, schedules, grades, report cards, fees, food service accounts and more. Skyward Family Access FAQ

Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Shelton in the Hyer office can assist parents with password resets if needed.

Student Arrival

This week, our office staff will begin issuing tardy slips promptly at 7:55 AM each day. Students not in the classroom by 7:55 AM are counted tardy. Parents are not permitted to walk late students to class. Instructional activities begin when students arrive in the classroom each morning. Students who arrive on time begin their day more smoothly, not rushing to get organized and settled, or trying to catch up with classmates who have already started their work. Please help us ensure that your child(ren) arrives safely and on time each day.

Lunch Visitors

We are excited to welcome lunch visitors to eat with their child this week. We have special visitor/guest tables set aside in the cafeteria and outside in Balto’s Courtyard for families to eat together – parents may NOT join the classroom table. Lunch guests may only have lunch with their child, student friends are not permitted to join families.

Starting the year strong with well established routines and procedures is so important for student success, and also for running any organization with LOTS of people! We so appreciate your support of the systems at Hyer.

Respectfully,

Debbie

Debbie Burt, Principal

PURPOSEFUL PEOPLE

We are excited to continue encouraging and celebrating our students as they build character throughout their elementary years. Research tells us that it is not grades or IQ scores that make us most successful, but instead the ability to “fail forward” - to develop resilience and persevere even when things get tough.

Each elementary campus will continue using the PurposeFULL people curriculum to focus on 9 different character traits throughout the year with lessons and activities tailored to individual grade levels. In the classroom, our teachers will be integrating conversations and activities to emphasize the importance of skills like Responsibility, Gratitude, Empathy, Perseverance, Honesty, Cooperation, Courage, and Creativity. Classes will also spend time with Ms. Thompson once a month to focus more in depth on these character traits. Our goal is to teach these young people to connect with one another more thoughtfully and skillfully and to work together to solve problems.

In the month of SEPTEMBER, we are focusing on RESPECT! Please contact Linde Thompson, Hyer Counselor, with any questions about the program.
