January 20, 2025 / Robert S. Hyer Elementary School | |
Dear Hyer Families,
I hope you are staying bundled up! This cold weather is biting; nice time to stay home with a fire, some hot chocolate, and a good book. It has been fun reading The Year of Billy Madison with all of you and the kids. It sounds like everyone is enjoying the story.
This week, let’s talk math. Just as it is important to practice reading outside of school, it is also critical that our students “do math” outside of school. It can be easy for some students to memorize facts; however, we want them to understand that subtraction and division means separating, and addition and multiplication require the action of joining. We want our kids to be able to apply their fact fluency knowledge to new situations, as well as to be able to create mental images that represent the operations. For example, can your child visualize and/or represent 2 groups of three? Have them draw a picture or use objects to model this understanding.
Kids should also use money, identify and analyze shapes in the world around them, spend time measuring ingredients in a recipe, and use a ruler to see the similarities and differences in various units of measurement.
Some activities you might do with your kids depending on their age and ability are:
· Sudoku puzzles, number crosswords, or other puzzles to encourage logical thinking and problem-solving. Start with simpler puzzles and gradually increase the difficulty.
· Explore the outdoors and look for patterns in leaves, flowers, or the arrangement of objects.
· Engage in crafts that involve measuring, cutting, and following geometric shapes.
· Involve kids in everyday activities, such as setting the table, sharing snacks equally, or budgeting playtime.
Additionally, linked below are the Family Math Guides from HPISD’s Education Services curriculum website. These guides are available for each nine-week grading period and provide parents with information on what skills their child is learning during the nine weeks. The guides also include important vocabulary related to learning, activities to support grade level math content, and some great conversation starters directly aligned with what is being taught in class.

Making math enjoyable and relatable to real-life situations can foster a positive attitude toward the subject. Your engagement with our kids in “doing math” outside of school helps reinforce their learning and build their confidence.
Have a fantastic week!
Respectfully,
Debbie
