August 11, 2025 / Robert S. Hyer Elementary School | |
Dear Hyer Families,
Our teachers and staff are excitedly anticipating the start of the school year! They have worked tirelessly over the last several weeks eagerly preparing for the arrival of our huskies this afternoon at 4:30 PM for Meet the Teacher, and the first day of school on August 13th.
As we prepare to provide each student with the best school experience when they enter our doors in a couple of days, I want to take a moment to share with you some ways we are prepared to navigate the needs of our students and staff regarding the flooding in Kerr County that has deeply impacted our community.
First and foremost, we love your kids and will do whatever we can to support them when needs arise whether related to the most recent heartbreak our community has suffered or any other situation. Teachers will not be initiating conversations with students regarding the tragedy. Teachers and school counselors will be in tune to, and available for students who demonstrate or express a concern. Elementary counselors have worked with all staff members on how to promote an emotionally safe classroom to support our kids. The presentation addressed signs to look for that could indicate a child is struggling, what to do if/when a student is struggling emotionally, and how to respond to questions with care and compassion in private settings.
Additionally, we encourage each of you to share information with your kids as you deem appropriate. If at any time you need guidance or assistance in talking with your child at home, please reach out to our counselor, Linde Thompson, as she can provide resources to support your specific needs.
Please see the directions below on how to access your child’s teacher AND class list through Skyward.
Remember that if you have a 4th grader, your child will have a homeroom teacher assigned and your child will be with that teacher for half the day and her partner teacher for the other half of the day. Miss Eppler will be teaching ELA/SS and her partner teacher Miss Hadley, will be teaching Math/Sci. Ms. Ingram will be teaching ELA/SS, and her partner teacher Mrs. Tartarian, will teach Math/Sci.
Class placement and class lists will be available electronically at 3:00 PM, this afternoon. We can’t wait to see you all later today!
Respectfully,
Debbie
Debbie Burt, Principal

Visitor and Birthday Policy
Hyer will have tables inside as well as outside, in Balto's Courtyard, if you would like to have lunch with your student during their lunch period. To help all students adjust to lunchtime routines and build confidence and independence, we kindly ask that parents and guardians wait to come to school for lunch visits until after September 8th.
If your child’s birthday falls before September 8th, you're welcome to join them for a special birthday lunch!
New NO Friend Policy
Please be aware of the school's new no friend policy at lunch. You and your child can no longer ask for a friend to join you when you visit them for lunch. This helps prevent any feelings of exclusion and allows you to enjoy meaningful one-on-one time with your child. Thank you for helping us create a welcoming, supportive environment for all our students!
While dining with your child, please remember to follow school cafeteria rules, even in the courtyard. It can be dangerous to have children running around, jumping off of benches, etc.
We celebrate every child’s birthday with special recognition on the morning announcements and in the classroom. Because of food allergies and nutritional guidelines, parents are asked not to bring birthday treats to distribute to other students in the class, either in the classroom or in the cafeteria.
Lunch Selection and Menu Options
Students in grades Kindergarten and 1st will have the option to buy either a hot or cold lunch each day. Students in grades 2nd - 4th will have the option to purchase items à la carte. Meat, vegetables, salads, sandwiches, fruits, milk, and juices are available each day.
A La Carte Limit
If you choose to set an a la carte limit, we ask that it is not below $10 to ensure your child gets a full lunch. Also, if you set a limit, please discuss it and the a la carte prices with your student so that they have an idea ahead of time and a cashier doesn’t have to make them put a packaged food back or throw a prepared food away.
Dessert
After the first few weeks of school, students will be allowed to purchase dessert.
- Ice cream will be available for purchase on FRIDAYS ONLY.
- Cookies will be available for purchase TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS for 2nd through 4th grades.
Menus are available HERE, or download the Nutraslice app!
| | | | |
Students are not required to purchase lunch from the cafeteria and may bring a lunch from home.
Cash will not be accepted in the cafeteria at this time. Please ensure that you have added funds to your child’s account before the first day of school on Wednesday, August 13th. Funds can either be added electronically through Skyward, or by delivering a check made out to "Hyer Elementary" to the Hyer office. Checks must be in an envelope addressed to Lorena Escobedo with your child's name on it.
How to electronically add funds to your student’s lunch account:
-
Log into eFunds for Schools using your Skyward login information.
- Click “Fund Lunch” under the “Make a Payment” tab. First-time users will be required to enter payment information.
- Select the student whose account you wish to fund and follow the step-by-step instructions to make a payment.
- Click "Submit" and wait for confirmation.
We suggest you enable account balance notifications so that you are aware when your student’s balance is running low. You may also automatically replenish your student’s balance. Please click “Low Meal Balance Settings” under “Payment Settings” and follow the steps to complete the process.
Hyer cafeteria staff and administration do not have access to your Skyward passwords or financial information. Should you need to reset your password, please click HERE to access the Skyward login page.
Questions
Questions may be directed to Brittany Hunt, Cafeteria Finance Chair, Lindsey Strawn, Cafeteria Volunteer Chair, or Lorena Escobedo, Cafeteria Manager.

Volunteers
Thank you to all the amazing volunteers who have stepped up to help in our Cafeteria this year! We are so excited to see all of you in the Hyer Café this fall! If you have not signed up, we still have spots for you! Please email Lindsey Strawn ASAP to find a shift this school year.
If you submitted interest in BSSU but have not heard anything back yet, please go ahead and email Lindsey Strawn to follow up!
The Hyer Cafe would not run without our parent volunteers (grandparents welcome too!). Cafeteria volunteer participation is essential in feeding our nearly 500 students (and saves our district over $400,000 a year), and we are SO grateful for those who take the time to do this important, once-a-month job!
THANK YOU to those who have already signed up, and please email here if you are still looking for a shift! We need you, and we appreciate you more than we can say! Thank you!

BIKE RODEO ART CONTEST
(SUBMISSIONS DUE SEPTEMBER 5TH)
| |
It’s almost that time of year again when our little huskies compete to be the artist featured on the annual Bike Rodeo T-shirt! This year, students are encouraged to create their entries for the bike rodeo art contest at home. This year's theme is “Deep in the Heart of Hyer,” and the T-shirt will be yellow.
Mrs. Munsie, our fabulous art teacher, has written up instructions for our the students to use as a guide. Submissions are due on September 5th, so it's not too early to sharpen your crayons & colored pencils & get drawing!
| | IMPORTANT SECURITY REMINDERS | |
Hyer takes pride in the security procedures we have in place to keep all our Huskies, staff, students, and families safe. While these processes may at times be inconvenient, please know that the intent is to ensure the safest school experience possible for Everyone.
-
At 7:55 AM, staff members will sweep the building and ask all visitors to either exit or sign-in at the front office.
-
Volunteers who have been through a background check with the district and have permanent badges will scan their badges in the office both upon arrival and when they leave. Printed badges will have a barcode on them for easy scanning for all volunteers and visitors.
-
When in the building for a parent meeting or to volunteer, guests must go through the office to check out and exit through the front doors. Parents/guests are asked to enter and exit only through the office during the school day. This helps us monitor who is in the building while students and staff are present.
- We have a video door system so that the front office can communicate with visitors prior to letting them in the office. You may be asked to provide your name and the purpose of your visit before being allowed entry into the office.
-
Doors CANNOT be propped open for any reason. Doors must be attended by an adult when open for an extended period of time while items are being brought into or out of the building.
We will continue to require anyone entering the building from 7:55 AM until dismissal to check-in with the front office and wear a Visitors Badge, and will continue to have a police officer on campus throughout the day.
Although some of these procedures may slightly delay entry and departure to/from the building, they are necessary to provide a safe and secure environment for ALL of our Hyer Huskies. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work together to ensure the safest environment possible during the school day.
| | WE NEED SPONSORS - AND WE NEED YOU! | |
The countdown is on for the Hyer Honky Tonk Auction, and we are still in need of sponsors to help make this event a success. This is not just a party — it’s one of Hyer’s biggest fundraising opportunities of the year, and we can’t do it without support from families and businesses like yours.
Sponsorship is an incredible way to show your Hyer pride and a great way to get involved with our beloved school. You will also get premium perks and high visibility across all event signage, materials, and digital platforms. Whether you’re promoting your business or showing support as a family, your contribution will make a direct impact on our school and students!
Don’t miss your chance to be part of something meaningful (and fun!) — please step up and join us today!
Please contact Stephanie Johns, Julie Meyer, and Whitney Ward for sponsorship opportunities!
