August 18, 2025 / Robert S. Hyer Elementary School

Wonderful Hyer Families,

It was energizing last week welcoming all of our huskies and each of you to the 2025-2026 school year at Boot Scootin’ Hyer! The teachers and I have been so impressed by the positivity and enthusiasm of each child as they came into school and adapted to their new schedules and school routines with ease.

Beginning today, Monday, Kindergarten - 4th grade students arriving between 7:30 and 7:45, will go to the gym; students will be dismissed from the gym to go to their classrooms at 7:45. Preschool students will enter through their door on Colgate beginning at 7:45. We encourage you to let your students walk into the building and go to the gym or their classrooms independently. This often helps with separation anxiety and fosters confidence in our younger students.

Each day, dismissal runs a little more smoothly. We are grateful for your assistance in following the established procedures found on the Hyer website.

To our families who park on a side street and walk to school to pick up/meet your child, we kindly ask that you wait for your student on the side of the front lawn where your child’s grade level is dismissed, and the direction of where you have parked your car. The classroom teacher will dismiss your child to where you are standing. Please do not walk over to the teacher to get your student as she is also managing students who are being called for carpool. Our goal is to ensure each student safely connects with their parent or guardian.

We also ask that you not walk across the front sidewalk on Caruth during dismissal as this is reserved for students getting into cars in the carpool lane. Please do not park on either side of Colgate. Dismissal on Colgate is reserved for preschool pick-up, handicap accessible pick up, and 2nd-4th grade students who may have younger siblings, and are walking or riding bikes with or without an adult.

Please, please, please for your safety, the safety of our students and to be a positive role model, do not cross in the middle of the street on either Caruth or Colgate. We kindly request that you use the crosswalks and cross the street with one of our incredible crossing guards.

We ask that families help ensure our students arrive by 7:55 AM each day. This gives our huskies time to get settled in class and sets a positive tone for the day.

We are all adjusting to the routines and procedures of being in school. Each parent/guardian and Hyer staff member plays an important role in our drop off and pick up procedures. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions about arrival or dismissal.

The Hyer staff and I are truly blessed to be part of this amazing community and are excited to work with you and your children this year.

Respectfully,

Debbie

A NOTE FROM NURSE RATHER

Hello Husky parents,

I am delighted to be back for another great school year. Please be aware that this year we will NOT require a physician signature on over-the-counter medications including Tylenol, Motrin, eye drops, etc. This is a change from last year. We will still require a physician signature for any prescription medications to be given at school. You can find the medication form on the district website under “Health Services," you can pick one up in the Hyer clinic, or click HERE.

I look forward to a great year at Hyer!

Best,

Nurse Kelley Rather

SUPPORT THE HYER HONKY TONK AUCTION!

There’s still time to join the fun as a sponsor for this year’s Hyer Honky Tonk Auction — the biggest parent party of the year! Whether you're representing your business or your family, sponsorship is a great way to show your Hyer pride while enjoying premium perks and top billing across our auction signage, materials, and digital platforms.

We’re also curating an incredible lineup of one-of-a-kind experiences, family adventures, dining packages, and artwork — but we can’t do it without your help. Do you have access to vacation homes, concert or sporting event tickets, behind-the-scenes experiences, or popular services? We’d love to feature them! And if you have airline miles or credit card points, we can pair them with travel packages to create unforgettable getaways. No donation is too big or too small — every contribution helps support our school and makes the night a bigger success.

HYER CAFETERIA NEWS

Visitor and Birthday Policy

Hyer will have tables inside as well as outside, in Balto's Courtyard, if you would like to have lunch with your student during their lunch period. To help all students adjust to lunchtime routines and build confidence and independence, we kindly ask that parents and guardians wait to come to school for lunch visits until after September 8th.

If your child’s birthday falls before September 8th, you're welcome to join them for a special birthday lunch!

New NO Friend Policy

Please be aware of the school's new no friend policy at lunch. You and your child can no longer ask for a friend to join you when you visit them for lunch. This helps prevent any feelings of exclusion and allows you to enjoy meaningful one-on-one time with your child. Thank you for helping us create a welcoming, supportive environment for all our students!

While dining with your child, please remember to follow school cafeteria rules, even in the courtyard. It can be dangerous to have children running around, jumping off of benches, etc.

We celebrate every child’s birthday with special recognition on the morning announcements and in the classroom. Because of food allergies and nutritional guidelines, parents are asked not to bring birthday treats to distribute to other students in the class, either in the classroom or in the cafeteria.

Dessert

Starting September 15th, students will be allowed to purchase dessert.

  • Ice cream will be available for purchase on FRIDAYS ONLY.
  • Cookies will be available for purchase TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS for 2nd through 4th grades.

Menus are available HERE, or download the Nutraslice app!

Volunteers

If you are still trying to secure a volunteer cafeteria shift, please reach out to Lindsey Strawn ASAP!

FAMILY UNDERWRITING CAMPAIGN ENDS THIS FRIDAY!

Join the Team! July 09-August 22

A new season is upon us! We are so excited about the year ahead and look forward to collaborating with your family in a meaningful way. As a Hyer community, we have the opportunity to give back to our school through the generosity of our families. Together, we can bridge the funding gap of $650,000 created by the Texas “recapture” laws. The private dollars that we raise as a PTA help cover truly essential items such as teacher salaries, classroom support and student programming.

There are so many perks for joining our family underwriting! Not only are you helping support the amazing school your kids attend, but there are also some incredible benefits!! Some of the perks to note:

  • gift baskets of exclusive swag
  • reserved seats at your child’s performances
  • PNO passes (parents night out)
  • most packages include auction tickets with VIP wristbands, moms-night out & carnival tickets.

Join our campaign TODAY!

The deadline for family recognition is this Friday, August 22nd.

BIKE RODEO ART CONTEST

This year, students are encouraged to create their entries for the bike rodeo art contest at home. This year's theme is “Deep in the Heart of Hyer,” and the T-shirt will be yellow.

Mrs. Munsie, our fabulous art teacher, has written up instructions for our the students to use as a guide. Submissions are due on September 5th, so it's not too early to sharpen your crayons & colored pencils & get drawing!

Please email Kyle Yohe or Ellen Kershaw if any of these resources might be a blessing to your family or a family you know at Hyer.

Our promise to you is confidentiality, unless you prefer otherwise. We are a neighborhood school with a big heart… and we hope everyone feels our love and support.

Did you LOVE the balloons and photo opps on the first day of school?!? How happy did it make the kids to see such a warm welcome?! You can thank Katey Plummer and Patty Georgeadis for all the creativity and execution that made it happen!

The Hyer SWAG is legit this year! Thank you Brynn Tremper and Whitney Cameron for ALL the hard work, calling the printer, double checking inventory, re-printing, etc. We'll never know how much work goes into this! Also - Misty Wall and Alyson Bell, thank you for helping with check-out at Meet-the-Teacher!

Thank you Holley Shelly and HPA for a successful Tears & Cheers after Kindergarten Drop-off! And hats off, round-of-applause for Julie Radford for getting four kids out the door and hosting the coffee on the first day of school!
