January 13, 2025 / Robert S. Hyer Elementary School

Dear Parents,

We had an incredible first week of 2025, welcoming our students back to school, and we are excited to recognize our Husky Heroes for December this morning. We are looking forward to a spectacular second semester.

In the coming weeks, our kindergarten through fourth grade students will be taking the middle-of-year MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Test. While our first through fourth graders are familiar with this assessment, it will be the first time for our kindergarten students.

MAP is designed to measure student achievement in math, reading, language usage, and science (for grades 3 and 4). The math test will be administered on one day, the reading and language usage tests will be given on separate days, and science testing will be conducted on a fourth day, if appropriate for the grade level. (Please note that the reading and language usage tests are separate assessments and will be reported as distinct scores.) The test adapts to each student's performance, personalizing questions based on previous responses. Some students may encounter questions that go beyond their current grade-level curriculum. Your child’s teacher will communicate when their class/grade level will be testing.

While MAP results provide valuable data to help teachers plan for individualized instruction and track student growth, it is just one of many factors we consider when making educational decisions. Standardized tests are a snapshot of student performance on a given day and do not solely determine a student's academic success or potential.

With this in mind, we encourage students to take the test seriously and do their best, so we can gather the most accurate data to inform future instruction. Please help your child prepare by offering a pep talk before the test.

Encourage them to focus, take their time, and give their best effort. Remind them that it’s okay if they don’t know every answer, as long as they are trying their best. If you have any questions about the MAP test, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

As always, the Hyer staff and I deeply appreciate all the ways you support and encourage our students. Thank you for your continued partnership in providing our Huskies with a positive school experience.

NEWS FROM THE CAFETERIA

Another Great Year in the Hyer Cafè!

Hyer families, we have a few important updates and reminders from the Hyer Cafè:

Sweet Treats:

  • Ice Cream will be available on Fridays only.
  • Cookies will be available for purchase on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2nd-4th graders.

Please remember to check your food service balance in Skyward.

A quick note about Skyward spending limits:

If your family has set a daily spending limit, please note that the "A La Carte" spend limit applies to the total amount your child can spend on their meal each day — not just for sides, chips, desserts, etc.!

Birthday Celebrations:

We kindly ask that you do not bring treats for your child's class on their birthday. However, you are welcome to celebrate with your child and a friend during lunch! Please only bring food for your child.

A Special Thank You:

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our cafeteria volunteers! We couldn't do it without you, and your little Huskies love seeing your faces!
