September 01, 2025 / Robert S. Hyer Elementary School

Dearest Hyer Families,

Whether you traveled or stayed close to home to unwind and recharge, I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend. While we have had a smooth start to the school year, it is always nice to have an extra day off to refresh after quickly getting back into the routine of “doing” school and managing after school activities.

Many of you are aware of a new security system that has been rolled out at each HPISD campus. It is wonderful in increasing security, but requires all campus guests entering the building to develop a few new habits. The first and most important habit we will want to develop is making sure to have a Driver’s License or form of official ID readily available when we enter a District Building.

Verkada is the name of our new system, and it uses your ID to check you in. If you are a frequent volunteer, you may want to come up soon (if you haven’t checked in at school yet) to load yourself into the system and perform a “test run” in order to become comfortable signing in. Additionally, if you have completed a background check and have a volunteer badge, that will speed up sign in time. If you don't have the volunteer badge, you will have to enter all of your information manually each time you come to school. This is a self-serve system, rather than being run by our fantastic office ladies!

The second new habit we may have to develop is just being prepared to wait in a line. It is highly likely that this will occur as we all gain a comfort level in navigating this new system, as we may have to be patient as we wait on the person who is signing in right before us. Some of our sweet volunteers recommend coming in picture ready – it does not take a picture you would want to use on your social media profile so looking your best could be helpful. 😉 As always, please wear your visitor/volunteer badge visibly on your person

We appreciate your patience and support as we work through this new system; we want to keep our students, families and staff as safe as possible. As always, please contact me with any questions.

Respectfully,

Debbie

DOT DAY!!

International Dot Day is next Friday September 12th!

What is Dot Day?

International Dot Day, based on the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, is coming up on Friday, September 12th. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who challenges a student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage and ignites a journey of creativity!

Each year on International Dot Day, the inspiration continues. We are inviting all of our Hyer Huskies to celebrate Dot Day by wearing dots, polka dotted shirts, dots on headbands, dots on socks, a homemade shirt, whatever you can find with dots! Our only request is that students do NOT put dots on their faces.

Let’s celebrate our creativity on Friday September 12!

❤️ WE CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER IN HYER! ❤️

Hyer Cares is a resource available to all Hyer families who need extra support. Whether the need is financial aid, a “sunshine box” for a family experiencing a hard time, a support system for new families, or kids feeling disconnected, or a meal delivered to your doorstep… Hyer Cares is here for you and your family.

Our promise to you is confidentiality, unless you prefer otherwise. We are a neighborhood school with a big heart… and we hope everyone feels our love and support.

Please email Kyle Yohe or Ellen Kershaw if any of these resources might be a blessing to your family or a family you know at Hyer.

- Shout out to Amanda Robertson and Lindsey Bauer for hosting a really fun, donut-eating, water-bottle-flipping, sugar-them-up-then-send-them-to-school Family Underwriting Breakfast with Principal Burt! Also thank you Principal Burt for making each of those kiddos feel really seen and special. You do it effortlessly, and with such joy!

- Thank you moms who eagerly signed up for room parent & photography parent like it was the Backstreet Boys concert at the Sphere in Vegas. You avid volunteers are the heartbeat of this school, and are here to say “I want it that way”.

- To our beloved teachers who delighted their classroom’s parents with information on Curriculum Night… we can’t express to you enough how much we adore y’all. Thank your for being “boots on the ground,” and there for our kids every single day.

- To Brynn Tremper - our Husky Shop ROCKSTAR - we can all thank her for the chochskis our kids come home with! #whyareyourhandssticky?

- Jenny O’Dwyer, our Directory Spot chair, my friend and a new mama to Hyer - you have jumped into a PTA position like I forced your hand to - I mean, like you wanted to…right?! Thank you for getting directory up & running!

- Lindsey Strawn and Brittany Hunt - you have made cafeteria volunteer shifts, cashier training, and feeding our kids run so smoothly this year! The only flaw has been that cashier who charged kids a large entree instead of fried fish… oops! I’m the problem, it’s me.

- To our volunteers who led training for other volunteers this week - Catherine Lowe in the art room, Lyndsay Parker in the library, and Brittany Miller in the Teacher Workroom. Y’all - thank you!!

- I can’t thank them enough - because not only are they my dear friends, but I also suckered them into auction chairs and they have done an extraordinary job thus far! Their heads are spinning with new, fun ideas! Whitney Ward, Stephanie Johns and Julie Meyer - if you see these mamas, check in on them!
