September 21, 2026 / Robert S. Hyer Elementary School

Dear Hyer Families,

We are sailing quickly through the month of September! Hopefully the downward trend in this week's temperatures is here to stay.

During the school day and in our classrooms, we watch our Huskies tackle big milestones every single day. Whether they are figuring out how to share, mastering long division, or learning to tie their shoes, they are constantly trying new things. Often, the most valuable lesson they learn isn't getting the answer right on the first try—it's what they do when they get it wrong.

One of our goals as teachers is to help our students practice the qualities of perseverance and grit.

Psychologist Dr. Angela Duckworth defines grit as passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Research shows that cultivating grit and a growth mindset is often a much better predictor of long-term academic satisfaction and success than IQ alone. When elementary students learn that intelligence isn't a fixed trait, they begin to view mistakes not as failures, but as proof that they are trying and learning.

Building this "grit muscle" takes time, and we love partnering with you to support your child's growth. Here are a few simple ways we can reinforce grit together at school and at home:

  • Praise the effort, not just the outcome: Instead of saying, "You're so smart," try highlighting their focus: "I can see how hard you worked on that problem!"

  • Normalize the struggle: When a task gets frustrating, remind them that learning should feel a little challenging. You can say, "It's okay that this is hard. That means your brain is growing!”
  • Use the power of "Yet": If your child says, "I can't do this," gently add the word yet to the end of their sentence. "You can't do this yet, but you are figuring it out."

  • Let them try first: It is natural to want to step in and fix a problem immediately. Giving them the space to struggle safely builds their confidence to handle the next hurdle independently.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for sending us such hardworking learners every day. We are proud of the progress our Huskies make each day!

Warmly,

Debbie
