September 30, 2024 / Robert S. Hyer Elementary School

Dear Hyer Families,

Fall is such an exciting time, with the cooler weather (still waiting on this!), and so many fun activities over the next couple months. As we settle into the rhythm of the school year, you will see in the Husky Herald over the next few weeks that October brings several fun events, and many ways you can get involved in experiences to support our students, teachers and school.

Our incredible PTA and countless volunteers have spent hours and hours planning Bike Safety Week, concluding with our traditional Bike Rodeo - a Husky fall favorite! And of course, the biggest event of the year at Hyer, our Auction Party, Hyer Era! In addition to these iconic events, our precious PTA continues to provide catered luncheons and a snack bar each month for the staff. We are humbled and blessed by the generosity and time each PTA member gives to our school to make Hyer the loving community it is.

We are so grateful for your continued support and involvement. Together, we can make this school year amazing for our students. If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas, don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, me, or PTA President Ann Higginbottom.

Cheers to the beginning of fall at Hyer Elementary!

Kindly,

Debbie

HPISD loves it's volunteers!

Having issues with your volunteer badge? Before you can volunteer in HPISD, you need to fill out the two forms below.

Parent Volunteers are an invaluable and essential part of the success and efficient operation of the Highland Park Independent School District. The amount of parental involvement in Highland Park ISD is what makes our schools unique.

To volunteer, each parent must complete the Volunteer Registration and Consent Form and the background check prior to volunteering at any district activity (ie: Carnival, Food Service, Field Trips).

*REMINDER: Both forms must be completed by each person who plans to volunteer at any campus. Click the links below to fill out both forms.

ALL-STAR RIDERS, IT’S BIKE RODEO TIME!

Bike riding can be thrilling and fun, but being an All-Star rider means understanding the rules of the road so students (and parents) can ride safely around the neighborhood.

KC CLUB PET FOOD DRIVE STARTS NEXT MONDAY!

The 4th Grade KC Club (Kindness and Compassion Club) is kicking off its first community service project of the year! The club will be collecting UNOPENED dog and cat food, treats, and bath towels to donate to Operation Kindness. Operation Kindness is a pioneer in Texas for assisting animals in need of veterinary care, companionship and, most of all, a home.

The food drive begins Monday, October 7th and will continue through Thursday, October 17th. Donation bins will be located in the hallways and at the Caruth entrance.

KC Club members are very enthusiastic about helping cats and dogs in this lifesaving animal shelter, as well as having the pet food bank re-stocked and ready for the fall. Thank you in advance for your generous donations. Please contact Community Service Chair Katrina Bolin  with any questions.

HYER BUILDS CHARACTER WITH PURPOSEFULL PEOPLE CURRICULUM

We are excited to continue encouraging and celebrating our students as they build character throughout their elementary years. Research tells us that it is not grades or IQ scores that make us most successful, but instead the ability to “fail forward” - to develop resilience and persevere even when things get tough.

Each elementary campus will continue using the PurposeFULL people curriculum to focus on 9 different character traits throughout the year with lessons and activities tailored to individual grade levels. In the classroom, our teachers will be integrating conversations and activities to emphasize the importance of skills like Responsibility, Gratitude, Empathy, Perseverance, Honesty, Cooperation, Courage, and Creativity. Classes will also spend time with Ms. Thompson once a month to focus more in depth on these character traits. Our goal is to teach these young people to connect with one another more thoughtfully and skillfully and to work together to solve problems.

In the month of SEPTEMBER, we are focusing on RESPECT! Please contact Linde Thompson, Hyer Counselor, with any questions about the program.
