#1.) Now THIS is a RED Diamond!
Winston Collection Unveiled
Outstanding Green, Shocking Yellow, Fabulous Blue, ... and a True White
Gary Roskin, G.G., FGA
Roskin Gem News Report
The Largest Red? This diamond isn’t remarkable simply for being a large red diamond. While it is indeed a sizable red diamond at 2.33 carats, that’s not what sets it apart.
And it’s not about being 1-in-a-million, or 1-in-25-million, or any other numerical rarity you might toss about. The Winston Red transcends statistics.
It’s really all about the color!
The Winston Red exists in a color class all its own. Singular. Unrivaled. A true pinnacle of red diamond color. Amongst red diamonds, this one stands at the summit.

#2) “Even a 10% tariff on rough gems we import into the U.S. from Tanzania and Kenya will have an Impact”
- Monica Stephenson, ANZA Gems
“I’ve been thinking about what this means for ANZA GEMS, LLC and our MoyoGems collaboration,” writes Monica Stephenson, president of ANZA Gems, in her LinkedIn post, speaking about the U.S. tariffs.
“There is no doubt that an additional 10% tariff on the rough gems we import into the U.S. from Tanzania and Kenya will have an impact, eventually.”
“I already pay the Tanzanian government about 7% (6 + 1% on the value of gems exported) plus export and other fees outside of the cost of shipping to the U.S. (Kenya slightly less).”

U.S. Tariff Shock - as reported on CNBC TV18

Roskin Gem News Report
Whiplash!
In a mind-numbing 180-degree reversal on Wednesday, the U.S. president abruptly paused all newly imposed 'reciprocal' tariffs for 90 days—except for the steep 145% levy on Chinese goods.
The move, which took effect just hours after the tariffs were enacted, left global markets reeling.
India, which had been staring down the prospect of economic fallout, had already begun bracing for disaster.

The Hybrid Master Set
How Cost and Availability Caused a Revelation
a MUST READ!

Gary Roskin
Roskin Gem News Report
By now, you’ve probably seen press releases from AGA (Accredited Gemologists Association) and GCAL by Sarine, announcing the new Hybrid Master Set—a diamond color comparison tray that includes both synthetic and natural diamonds—soon to be available from Stuller.
As you may know, grading the color of near-colorless and colorless diamonds requires a comparison set of GIA color-graded diamonds, known as a Master Set. Each Master Stone represents the highest position within its grade. For example, an E Master Stone is the highest E color possible—closest to D, and farthest from F.
So when comparing a diamond to the E Master:
- If your diamond shows less color, it’s graded D.
- If it shows more color than the E Master, you move on and compare it to the F Master, and so on.
So where do you get a Master Set? Great question!
For the past 20 years, it has been virtually impossible to acquire a Master Set!
And this is where our story begins... with the Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) on a virtual online roundtable discussion with representatives from the AGA, GIA (Gemological Institute of America), CGA (Canadian Gemmological Association), ASA (American Society of Appraisers), and AGS (American Gem Society) all asking the same question, "Where do we get a Master Set?"
After two years of hard - and very frustrating - work, with major cooperation, and some very smart work-arounds, here is the story of how the Hybrid Master Set, against all odds, became a reality!

Christie's Pulls Geneva Headliner
The 23.24-carat "Golconda Blue"
Why is this diamond so important?

Anthony DeMarco,
Senior Contributor, Forbes.com

Roskin Gem News Report
The 23.24-carat “Golconda Blue” fancy vivid blue diamond has been pulled from the May 14 Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale, says Anthony DeMarco, contributing editor for Forbes.com. Its estimate was $35 - $50 million, with some speculation even going so far as to say it could be sold for $100 million!
Keeping it in the family
According to DeMarco, "Christie’s provided a brief statement saying the unidentified owners of the rare gem decided to sell it within the family." The statement reads: “The Golconda Blue's historic provenance, uncovered by Christie’s research, has generated considerable market interest and much excitement globally. At this time, the owners have made the decision to pursue a sale of the diamond to a family member.”

U.S. Tariffs Weigh on Malawi's Mining
Global Gemstone Mining Sector will be Heavily Affected

Mining & Trade Review
Patrick Lunda
"With the U.S. government imposing tariffs on importation of goods from 145 countries, including Malawi, the mining industry will be heavily affected," so writes the Mining & Trade Review.
In an interview, Economic Association of Malawi (Ecama) President Bertha Bangara Chikadza said this will minimise export volumes of goods including mining products to the U.S.
She said, "A 17 percent tariff imposed by the U.S. on Malawian exports would have severe short-term shocks and long-term structural consequences, given Malawi's reliance on a few key exports (tobacco, tea, sugar, legumes) and products from the newly commissioned
mines and its fragile macroeconomic position.

Small Scale Miners Form Federation
Malawi Ban on Gem Exports Still in Effect?

Mining & Trade Review
Patrick Lunda
Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners (ASM) have formed an umbrella body to fight the common problems they face in the industry.
Percy Maleta, Managing Director for Maleta Gems and Jewels and PL Treasurers said the initiative was mooted because the ASM subsector plays a crucial role in economic development of the country.
He said: "The Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining subsector plays a critical role in development yet faces numerous challenges, including inadequate policy support, unsafe working conditions and limited access to markets and mining.
To address these issues, the Mining Federation for ASM is being established as a unified voice for miners in gemstones, gold, quarrying, ceramics and other areas."

DHL's B2C $800 Limit
GIA Clients Outside U.S. Should Not Send Items Directly to GIA in the U.S.

Uncertainty and chaos over U.S. tariffs continue to plague the global gem trade.
DHL made the announcement last week that the company will stop shipping packages over $800 in value to U.S. consumers in response to new, more stringent U.S. customs rules.
The carrier cited the 10% tariffs implemented by the Trump administration in early April, which it says had the effect of subjecting parcels worth over $800 to increased scrutiny by U.S. customs inspectors. That has led to shipping backlogs, DHL said.
"This change has caused a surge in formal customs clearances, which we are handling around the clock," DHL said in a statement. "While we are working diligently to scale up and manage this increase, shipments over USD 800—regardless of origin—may experience multi-day delays."
So far this has not affected Business to Business shipments, however, tariffs are still in affect!
And making this even more complicated, reportedly, this could all change for the worse as possible new tariff regulations take effect May 2nd.
GIA
GIA also made an announcement two weeks ago to their laboratory clients that tariffs apply to all gems being shipped to the laboratory in the U.S., even if it is just for laboratory services!
We reported here that GIA has expanded take in at their Hong Kong and Dubai labs to accept larger goods as a work-around.

"We need more gemologists in Government"
Local ASMs, Dealers Ask Government to Remove Restrictions on Gemstone Exportation

Mining & Trade News
Washard Betha
Local Artisanal and Small-scale Miners (ASMs) and Gemstones dealers have called on the Malawi Government to remove the newly introduced restrictions on the exportation of gemstones saying they are greatly affecting their business.
The Ministry of Mining recently banned exportation of gemstones and precious minerals and the Malawi Revenue Authority followed up with a notice that included “unmanufactured gemstones” among the list of restricted and prohibited imports/exports.
▻
Gemstone miner and dealer Chikomeni Manda also bemoaned the ban saying engaging the exporters would have been ideal before shutting down the system completely.
Manda said the reasons that led to the ban were unjustifiable and retrogressive to the sector whole market is always unstable in nature.
He said: “The way they did it was not a proper way because they could have engaged gemstone dealers on the problems to map the way forward.”
“Even though some stones might be undervalued, when exporting they go through all appropriate channels such that we have gemologists who evaluate these stones in accordance with the prevailing market situation.”
“The gemstone market is different compared to that of other minerals. You can sell the same stone today at a high price, come tomorrow it goes at a lower price so in that scenario amount of revenue differ. As we speak, gemstones market is very down and dealers are struggling a lot in terms of marketing and pricing.”
