The IEC Brief: September 28, 2021
The IEC Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. The IEC is proud to reflect on the contributions of the Hispanic American community, especially within engineering, including the institutions dedicated to educating and mentoring our future Hispanic engineers.

While a time to celebrate our Hispanic community, it is also a time to take the necessary steps to create a more just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive society. The IEC pledges its continued support and celebration for our Hispanic community through dedicated programs, resources, and infrastructure designed to propel our industry forward.

IEC Sustaining Member Meeting Recap
From September 21, 2021

Thank you to each of our member schools that participated in last week's IEC Sustaining Member Meeting! The meeting provided an update on the organization and outlined a number of grant proposal and partner collaboration opportunities for our members.

We ask that each member school share the content of this meeting with their faculty and colleagues and encourage their participation in areas of interest. We are very excited about these opportunities, but need the full support of our member schools in order to take advantage of them.

Learn about participation opportunities in the IEC's upcoming NSF grant proposals:

Capacity Building for Research at Minority-Serving Institutions (CyBR-MSI) Program
American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and
the National Science Foundation (NSF)
October 2021 - January 2022

Save the date and mark your calendars to join ASEE and NSF in the Capacity Building for Research at Minority-Serving Institutions (CyBR-MSI) program. The CyBR-MSI program seeks to increase the participation and competitiveness of MSIs for NSF's Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) core programs. This is a fully funded program with no cost to researchers at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs).

The purpose of the CyBR-MSI program is threefold:

  1. to help participants identify and co-create research ideas for NSF CISE core programs;
  2. to form and develop research teams among researchers from MSIs; and
  3. to establish the groundwork for competitive grant proposals.

(Formerly known as ECE Forward)

This yearlong series of workshops and mentoring activities for juniors and seniors is aimed at increasing and maintaining the number of women, Black, and Hispanic (WBH) students in ECE. Attendees include Texas ECE and non-UT undergraduate students, in particular undergrads from HBCUs and HSIs from partner institutions in Texas.

The workshops for junior and senior students will provide the support and self-efficacy tools that WBH students may fine useful to move forward from undergrad to grad school, while getting involved in summer undergraduate research in the process. The program will help ensure that more WBH students are represented in next generation graduate researchers on their path to becoming leaders and role models in ECE.
