The International Law Section Gazette
Dear ILS,
I look forward to seeing everyone at the ILS Holiday Party this Thursday and toasting to the end of an amazing 2024! As a reminder, we are having a toy drive for the benefit of Americans for Immigrant Justice. We hope that you get in the holiday spirit and contribute an unwrapped gift to support this initiative. You can check out their Amazon Wishlist for gift inspiration.
Speaking of the spirit of giving back, I invite you all to read our Member Spotlight highlighting Executive Council member Phillip Buhler. Among many other endeavors, Phil is a board member of Ukraine Focus, a non-profit that has provided over 250 ambulances and other aid to Ukraine since the start of the war in 2022. Learn more about Phil’s experience personally driving one of the ambulances from Normandy to the Ukraine border earlier this year in his inspiring spotlight. Simply incredible!
Have a great week!

Save the Date for the 2025 Richard DeWitt Memorial Vis Pre-Moot Competition Hosted by JAMS!
Are you ready to embark on an exciting journey into the realm of international commercial law and arbitration?
Join us for the Florida Bar International Law Section’s Pre-Moot Event, a dynamic educational program that bridges the gap between theory and practice, preparing students for the prestigious 32nd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna.
Event Overview: At this year’s Pre-Moot, we’re taking it up a notch with a hybrid format that combines in-person and virtual experiences. This unique event is designed for practitioners who will step into the shoes of mock arbitrators for challenging arbitration “rounds.” Our goal? To provide practical training, foster a deeper understanding of international commercial law, and prepare students for resolving complex international business disputes.
The Challenge: Our program revolves around a captivating fictional problem. This problem delves deep into the intricacies of international law, touching on jurisdictional, procedural, and substantive issues in a dispute between the Claimant and Respondent. While the countries’ names are fictitious, the parties and the tribunal adhere to real international treaties and rules, ensuring a rigorous and authentic experience.
To register as a volunteer arbitrator, please click the flyer above, or please click here!

If you are reading the Gazette, chances are that you are a practitioner or a student with an interest in International Law, one of the most wide-ranging, exciting and challenging legal specialties. Everyone in our field knows how crucial it is to stay on top of diverse and evolving national legal regimes, and at the same time, the difficulty of keeping meticulously up-to-date on developments around the world.
The International Law Section (ILS) of The Florida Bar is here to help you, the practitioner, navigate both the everyday and big-picture challenges of our field. Our Section is your forum to share knowledge and best practices, and to meet and mingle with peers in professional collaborations that can only enhance your grasp of the specialty and your standing among clients and peers.
Let ILS membership assist you in developing a thriving international practice through peer network development that includes important shared learnings and reciprocal referrals of clients and casework.
If your practice transcends borders, join us in making this the authoritative, go-to forum for Florida and the gateway to the region for anyone practicing International Law. Our Section is open to lawyers from other states and countries, full-time faculty at U.S. law schools, and full-time U.S. law students, all of whom may participate as associate members.
