“If you can’t pay it back, pay it forward.”
— Catherine Ryan Hyde
Dear ILS Members,
Recently the Florida Board of Bar Examiners released the results of the latest Florida Bar Exam reporting a 71% passage rate. I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate the law student graduates who are now fellow Florida lawyers. Welcome to the Bar! Your hard work, dedication and skills resulted in an incredible achievement. This is a defining moment in your legal career that is destined for success. Enjoy the journey and I hope it’s international!
As a Section, we have historically focused on our law students and young lawyers through programs, engagement and leadership opportunities. I’m so impressed and encouraged by the young lawyers who have taken on leadership roles at the ILS to help us achieve our goals at the Board, Executive Council and Committee levels. These lawyers are incredibly talented, focused and passionate about international law - it’s contagious! I want to thank them publicly because their commitment, sacrifice and contributions are invaluable. Ultimately, our future is bright because of our young leaders, but we can do more to increase the number of young lawyers in our Section. As such, we are launching a collaboration with the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division (YLD) to organize webinars, programs, events, etc. If you or a young lawyer you know is interested in getting more involved with the ILS, please connect them with me or our Chair Elect, Ana Barton, who is leading our important ILS-YLD Collaboration.
This past week, I had the pleasure of meeting with the Co-Chairs of our Law School Liaison Committee, Prof. Manuel Gomez and our Treasurer, Laura Reich. We had an important and productive discussion on the opportunities and challenges surrounding our Section’s law student membership. While we acknowledged that over the years, we have had outstanding law students participate in the Richard DeWitt Memorial Vis Pre-Moot and volunteer at our iLaw Conference with considerable success, we recognized that more can be done to engage them throughout the year. To that end, the Law School Liaison Committee will be developing a plan to (i) promote ILS membership to law students throughout the State; (ii) collaborate with the law schools and law student organizations to organize programs for law students interested in international law, and (iii) establish the ILS Internship Program where law students can serve as interns for each of our ILS Committees and work directly with their respective Committee Chairs. This will allow the law students to gain exposure to international law, obtain valuable experience, and network with international lawyers, while making valuable contributions to their Committees and the ILS as a whole. Please contact Prof. Gomez or Laura if you would like to be involved in this exciting ILS Law Student Initiative.
Speaking of excitement, this coming week we have two very exciting events. First, on September 27, we are co-hosting a Venture Capital Event with the Miami Finance Forum, eMerge Americas and the Florida Venture Forum at the Four Seasons Brickell in Miami. This event will feature some of the most important venture capital firms in Florida. ILS members are entitled to a member discount rate. I will be moderating the panel and hope to see you there!
On September 28, we are co-hosting an End of Summer Social with the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) at Bay 13 in Coral Gables. This will be an enjoyable time to catch up and network with your fellow colleagues as we bid farewell to a wonderful summer!
More details on these events, registration and more are below. I encourage you to come out and support your ILS, and please pay it forward by inviting a young lawyer or law student to join you!
Cheers,

If you are reading the Gazette, chances are that you are a practitioner or a student with an interest in International Law, one of the most wide-ranging, exciting and challenging legal specialties. Everyone in our field knows how crucial it is to stay on top of diverse and evolving national legal regimes, and at the same time, the difficulty of keeping meticulously up-to-date on developments around the world.
The International Law Section (ILS) of The Florida Bar is here to help you, the practitioner, navigate both the everyday and big-picture challenges of our field. Our Section is your forum to share knowledge and best practices, and to meet and mingle with peers in professional collaborations that can only enhance your grasp of the specialty and your standing among clients and peers.
Let ILS membership assist you in developing a thriving international practice through peer network development that includes important shared learnings and reciprocal referrals of clients and casework.
If your practice transcends borders, join us in making this the authoritative, go-to forum for Florida and the gateway to the region for anyone practicing International Law. Our Section is open to lawyers from other states and countries, full-time faculty at U.S. law schools, and full-time U.S. law students, all of whom may participate as associate members.
