“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Dear ILS Members,
We recently had our ILS Leadership Forum at Puttshack. This was an opportunity for our ILS Leaders (Board, Executive Council and Committee Chairs) to engage in valuable team building, establish important goals and plans for the coming year and enjoy some putt-putt fun!
Forum highlights included an icebreaker where leaders answered a few questions about themselves and then we had to guess who they were. It was interesting and funny to see some of our ILS Leaders identify a lemur and an owl as the animal that best represents them, mint chocolate chip ice cream as the ice cream that captures their personality, flying as a favorite superpower, and Don’t Stop Believin’ and Rapper’s Delight as go-to karaoke songs. We also participated in a team builder where we broke up into teams and created our own cruise line, airline or theme park. The winning team was Galaxies, led by team captain, Omar Ibrahem. Their company combined space travel with cruising the galaxies.
We then engaged in important planning of our events and programs for this coming year. We focused on this year’s theme: Elevating Our International Leadership and discussed iLaw, Foreign Bars, ILQ, Pre-Moot, CLEs, Marketing and many of our other committees. Finally, we played some competitive and fun putt-putt, which included holes sponsored by Ascension, Buchanan, Harper Meyer, Harris Bricken, Ingage, JAMS, Robert J. Becerra, P.A. and Shutts. Thank you sponsors!
Our Section is a volunteer organization, and it takes a number of members who dedicate their time and talents to accomplish the amazing work that we do. I’m grateful to all of the ILS Leaders who are helping us achieve our goals and privileged to lead this great Section.
This month we have some excellent upcoming events, including a Lunch & Learn on September 14, a Venture Capital Event on September 27, and a Social on September 28. Please see more details and register below. I look forward to seeing you there!
Saludos,

On September 21, 2023, the University of Miami School of Law's White & Case International Arbitration L.L.M. Program and International Arbitration Institute invites ILS Members to the 2023 White & Case International Arbitration Lecture on "ICSID Arbitration: Past, Present and Future" featuring Meg Kinnear, Secretary-General of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
International investment law and dispute settlement have been amongst the most dynamic areas of international law in recent decades. This lecture will examine the origins of investment protection, highlight recent reforms to investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) procedure, address some of the misunderstandings about the topic and discuss some of the challenges that lay ahead. It will also consider the role of ISDS in attracting and retaining foreign direct investment, as governments seek to establish policy, legal and institutional environments that are conducive to mobilizing private capital.

If you are reading the Gazette, chances are that you are a practitioner or a student with an interest in International Law, one of the most wide-ranging, exciting and challenging legal specialties. Everyone in our field knows how crucial it is to stay on top of diverse and evolving national legal regimes, and at the same time, the difficulty of keeping meticulously up-to-date on developments around the world.
The International Law Section (ILS) of The Florida Bar is here to help you, the practitioner, navigate both the everyday and big-picture challenges of our field. Our Section is your forum to share knowledge and best practices, and to meet and mingle with peers in professional collaborations that can only enhance your grasp of the specialty and your standing among clients and peers.
Let ILS membership assist you in developing a thriving international practice through peer network development that includes important shared learnings and reciprocal referrals of clients and casework.
If your practice transcends borders, join us in making this the authoritative, go-to forum for Florida and the gateway to the region for anyone practicing International Law. Our Section is open to lawyers from other states and countries, full-time faculty at U.S. law schools, and full-time U.S. law students, all of whom may participate as associate members.
