The song is ended, but the melody lingers on.
- Irving Berlin
Dear ILS Members,
The ending of my tenure as Chair will usher in a new beginning. Each June, a new Chair brings in their ideas and sets new goals for the ILS with the aim of continuing to propel our organization forward. Although the year goes by quickly, the work that is done lingers on much, much longer. For the past 41 years, each Chair has, in their own way and style, built on the great work completed by prior Chairs. At the beginning of the term, I invited the very first Chair of our Section, Stephen Zack, to share his thoughts with our members. Now that we are at the end of the term, I invited our current Immediate Past Chair, James Meyer, to also share a few words. Thank you to all our Past Chairs for your hard work and dedication in furthering the mission of The Florida Bar International Law Section.
Best regards,

ILS Immediate Chair's Message | |
Dear ILS Members,
As sure as the sun will rise and set on Friday, June 23, Jacqueline Villalba is going to hear the often-repeated annual joke about her finally achieving the most coveted position in the International Law Section; namely, “Immediate Past Chair.” Of course, the joke is that she will be departing from the most difficult and time-consuming job in the Section to the easiest job in the Section. However, like all good jokes, it is based on more than just a grain of truth. Maybe that is why the Section has such a great track record for Past Chairs continuing to attend ILS events on a regular basis for many years after their tenure.
As the current Immediate Past Chair, I can tell you that it was truly a joy to witness the Section thrive under Jackie’s reign. Of course, I will admit to feeling a little bit jealous every time I attended an event only to see that the attendance was three times the best attendance that I was able to muster during my tenure. Of course, Jackie would try to make me feel better, assuring me that my year at the helm was the critical ramp-up period that allowed for the great success of her administration. Of course, we all know that’s not true. The current exalted status of the ILS is due almost exclusively to the hard work and infinite charm that Ms. Villalba brought to the organization as Chair. Of course, it didn’t hurt that she had such an amazing Executive Board, Executive Council and newly energized rank and file membership.
I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Immediate Past Chair during my tenure, Robert “Bob“ Becerra, who gave me the best advice about how to be the best Immediate Past Chair possible. He told me that I should try to show up to as many events as possible but, even more importantly, “try to stay out of the way.” Historically speaking, I think that makes Bob the official “George Washington” of ILS Immediate Past Chairs, setting the gold standard for all Immediate Past Chairs of the future. So, Jackie, as amazing as you were this year, I hereby pass you the torch of the Immediate Past Chair with the understanding that you will maintain Bob’s tradition and let the next Chair try their best to shine as brightly as you did - a high bar indeed.
Viva The ILS!
Warmest regards,
Jim

If you are reading the Gazette, chances are that you are a practitioner or a student with an interest in International Law, one of the most wide-ranging, exciting and challenging legal specialties. Everyone in our field knows how crucial it is to stay on top of diverse and evolving national legal regimes, and at the same time, the difficulty of keeping meticulously up-to-date on developments around the world.
The International Law Section (ILS) of The Florida Bar is here to help you, the practitioner, navigate both the everyday and big-picture challenges of our field. Our Section is your forum to share knowledge and best practices, and to meet and mingle with peers in professional collaborations that can only enhance your grasp of the specialty and your standing among clients and peers.
Let ILS membership assist you in developing a thriving international practice through peer network development that includes important shared learnings and reciprocal referrals of clients and casework.
If your practice transcends borders, join us in making this the authoritative, go-to forum for Florida and the gateway to the region for anyone practicing International Law. Our Section is open to lawyers from other states and countries, full-time faculty at U.S. law schools, and full-time U.S. law students, all of whom may participate as associate members.
