“The most valuable possession you can own is an open heart. The most powerful weapon you can be is an instrument of peace.”
— Carlos Santana
Dear ILS Members,
We had a few celebrations kick off this past week. On September 15, we started celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, a month-long celebration that recognizes the significant contributions of Hispanics and Latinos in the United States. The September 15 day was selected to coincide with the independence of many Latin American countries from Spain on September 15, 1821, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The celebration also happens to start on my birthday, so it’s pretty easy for me to remember. Ha! Hispanic immigrants, culture, music and food have had a significant influence in the United States, especially in Florida. As a Cuban American, this celebration is very meaningful to me. It helps me celebrate and reflect on the culture, values, sacrifice and contributions of my parents, my family and so many other Latino immigrants who came to the United States in search of a better life.
We also enjoyed an inspiring Lunch and Learn with prominent international lawyer, Patricia Mendez Cambo. Patricia shared her amazing personal and professional journey from a young Associate to Vice Chair of Greenberg Traurig, her billion-dollar international deals with Telefonica, and her senior in-house counsel role at Softbank. She also reflected on the challenges that she overcame to achieve success as a Latina and mother in corporate America and emphasized the importance of mentors, hard work and a bit of luck. Thank you to Jim Meyer for leading the discussion and Fiduciary Trust International for hosting us!
At sundown on September 15, the Jewish community also celebrated Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish New Year! It’s a special holiday that focuses on a time of deep reflection and repentance cherished with family and friends.
Shana Tova!

Program and International Arbitration Institute invites ILS Members to the 2023 White & Case International Arbitration Lecture on "ICSID Arbitration: Past, Present and Future" featuring Meg Kinnear, Secretary-General of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
International investment law and dispute settlement have been amongst the most dynamic areas of international law in recent decades. This lecture will examine the origins of investment protection, highlight recent reforms to investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) procedure, address some of the misunderstandings about the topic and discuss some of the challenges that lay ahead. It will also consider the role of ISDS in attracting and retaining foreign direct investment, as governments seek to establish policy, legal and institutional environments that are conducive to mobilizing private capital.
