ILS Chair's News & Notes

Dear ILS Members,

Who could possibly imagine that the Chair of the International Law Section would be writing today about anything other than our much anticipated and celebrated 2023 iLaw Conference being held next Friday at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Miami? Admittedly, not much could possibly eclipse the excitement leading up to what will definitely be another banner flagship event for the International Law Section. However, such an event occurred yesterday at noon at the Dulles International Airport when our Section’s dear friend, Felix Maradiaga, landed on US soil and was reunited with his beautiful wife and daughter after spending 611 torturous days in the notorious El Chipote Prison for the crime of being a Presidential Candidate in the cruel and dictatorial regime of Daniel Ortega. We did not forget Felix, and Felix did not give up! Gratefully, 221 other similarly detained political prisoners are also celebrating their freedom. I am so pleased to be able to report this wonderful and miraculous news, as it is a great victory for those who believe with all their hearts in the most fundamental precepts of Freedom, Rule of Law and other basic Human Rights for which this Section so firmly stands.

I invite you to join us next Friday at our iLaw Conference where, during our closing Cocktail Reception, we will raise our glasses in a grand toast to our dear and courageous friend Felix Maradiaga!

Best regards,

Jacqueline Villalba, Esq.

Internship Opportunity Organized by the Paris Bar for both English and French Speaking Lawyers!

Since 1991, the Paris Bar organizes a unique training program for young French speaking lawyers, in partnership with the Ecole de Formation professionnelle des Barreaux du ressort de la cour d'appel de Paris (EFB).  The "Stage International" brings together young French speaking lawyers from all over the world for a two-month theoretical and practical training.  Since 2015, the Paris Bar also organizes a second version of the program for English speaking lawyers called the "International Program".

Both programs are organized in cooperation with foreign bar associations and are supported by some French Embassies abroad. The Stage International will take place from October to November 2023 (8 weeks).  The International Program will take place in May and June 2023 (exact dates to be confirmed by the Paris Bar).

The internship offers participants an introduction to the French legal system.  In the first month of the Stage International the foreign lawyers will participate in programs of the “Ecole de Formation du Barreau” to be able to understand the French legal system and its procedures.  Participants are able to discover the daily routine of the Palais de Justice by attending hearings, visiting the major French institutions and getting an insight of European law.  In the second month, the foreign lawyers will have the opportunity to experience Parisian legal life and will intern in a Parisian Law Firm.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Europe Committee Chair Susanne Leone at [email protected] for more information.
