“There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.”
-Kofi Annan
Dear ILS Members,
Over 100 years ago, on August 26, 1920, women in America were first granted the right to vote pursuant to the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This historic achievement is now celebrated on August 26 of each year as Women’s Equality Day in America. In addition to honoring women in our country on that day, and recognizing the advocates who made it possible, the day helps raise awareness of the work still left to achieve gender equality in our country.
At the ILS, we have had five women serve as Past Chairs, including: Jacqueline Villalba, Clarissa Rodriguez, Francesca Russo-Di Staulo, Jana Sigars-Malina, and Maurine O’ Brien. In addition, we currently have three women leaders on our ILS Board, Ana Barton (Chair Elect), Cristina Vicens (Secretary), and Laura Reich (Treasurer). We also currently have fourteen women on our Executive Council and eight women serving as Chairs or Co-Chairs of nine ILS Committees.
It is an honor to be leading this Section alongside these inspiring and talented women lawyers in an organization that empowers them to elevate the practice of law both in the U.S. and abroad. I am also excited about the opportunity to engage with all of them at our Section’s upcoming Leadership Forum on August 30, as we plan the future goals, programs and initiatives of this coming year.
Speaking of inspiring women lawyers, please be sure to rsvp for our Lunch & Learn with the incomparable Patricia Mendez Cambo on September 14 at Fiduciary Trust International. I cannot wait to hear about her fascinating professional and international journey from Big Law to in-house and ultimately, the boardroom. You do not want to miss it!
