“Don’t give up. Every day is worth it."
-Hashmat Effendi, Breast Cancer Survivor
Dear ILS Members,
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For almost 40 years, our country has dedicated this month to raising awareness and educating our society about breast cancer, including the importance of screenings and early detection. I’m certain many of our Section members and their family, friends and colleagues have suffered, recovered and worse, died from breast cancer (or other forms of cancer). While not an international law topic per se, we can all join the fight against breast cancer. Indeed, cancer doesn’t discriminate – it attacks and seeks to kill vulnerable victims irrespective of their race, religion, gender, national origin, or sexual orientation. But we can all do our part to help support early detection, education, and donations. As such, please consider wearing pink to show your support and making a donation in honor of the courageous women who are fighting, have conquered or lost their lives to breast cancer. There are many worthy charities supporting this important cause, but if you’re unsure, I encourage you to join me in visiting and donating to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, https://www.komen.org/.
Last week, I mentioned that our Section just released the Fall 2023 issue of our International Law Quarterly (ILQ): BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). Since then, I’ve had an opportunity to read several of the interesting articles by our talented authors who wrote about the countries in this important economic block. The articles touch on some key areas, including the “Race to Space,” the economic challenges in China, the growing global significance of BRICS in international trade, and the growing anticorruption outlook in Brazil. I believe this BRICS issue of the ILQ is one of the most insightful and timely pieces our Section has ever published. I urge all of you to read it at this critical time in our world where conflict, political uncertainty, and economic hardship abound. As BRICS continues to emerge and increase its strength on the global state, international lawyers should be well informed and prepared to anticipate, navigate and advise on the opportunities and challenges it will present.
Best,

If you are reading the Gazette, chances are that you are a practitioner or a student with an interest in International Law, one of the most wide-ranging, exciting and challenging legal specialties. Everyone in our field knows how crucial it is to stay on top of diverse and evolving national legal regimes, and at the same time, the difficulty of keeping meticulously up-to-date on developments around the world.
The International Law Section (ILS) of The Florida Bar is here to help you, the practitioner, navigate both the everyday and big-picture challenges of our field. Our Section is your forum to share knowledge and best practices, and to meet and mingle with peers in professional collaborations that can only enhance your grasp of the specialty and your standing among clients and peers.
Let ILS membership assist you in developing a thriving international practice through peer network development that includes important shared learnings and reciprocal referrals of clients and casework.
If your practice transcends borders, join us in making this the authoritative, go-to forum for Florida and the gateway to the region for anyone practicing International Law. Our Section is open to lawyers from other states and countries, full-time faculty at U.S. law schools, and full-time U.S. law students, all of whom may participate as associate members.
