Fans Create New Winners In The 10th Independent Music Awards
Vox Pop Poll
Girl In A Coma, Tripping Lily, Karim Baggili, Melissa Auf der Maur and
Zhao Jiazhen Among Those Honored By Music Fans
July 19, 2011 Music Resource Group (MRG) and The Independent Music Awards
(The IMAs), the international program for independent bands and fans today announced the results of The IMA Vox Pop poll, the fan-determined portion of the annual awards. More than 57,000 music fans from around the world voted online for their favorite self-released and independent label artists culled from the 250 Nominees in more than 70 Album, Song, Music Video and Design categories.
Included in the latest batch of IMA winners are the punk rocker group Girl In A Coma, the folk pop quartet Tripping Lily, and Belgian guitar/oud prodigy Karim Baggili. Among those adding Vox Pop honors to their IMA honors announced earlier this year are former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur, and renowned guqin virtuoso Zhao Jiazhen from The Peoples Republic Of China.
The complete list of winners is below; their nominated work and bios available at www.TheIndependentMusicAwards.com
More than 75 percent of the “people’s voice” selections differed from those named in February by the artist and industry judging panel that included Tom Waits, Suzanne Vega, Ozzy Osbourne, Aimee Mann, Seal, Anthony DeCurtis (Rolling Stone), Kevin Lyman (Warped Tour), and Bill Bragin (Lincoln Center) among many other music industry professionals.
“The Independent Music Awards celebrate artists who follow their own muse and the music fans who support them,” said The IMA Executive Director, Martin Folkman. “The Vox Pop award is one of the many ways The IMAs motivates fans to discover and support incredible independent talent, which after all is the purpose of The IMAs,” Folkman said.
“One of the most compelling aspects about the Vox Pop results is the undeniable proof that active bands and motivated fans are a winning combination” said Folkman. In addition to targeted marketing outreach from The IMAs and partners, all Nominees were given a promotional tool kit that included a voting widget to share on their websites and social media pages. “Nominees who posted their widget improved their chances of earning the Vox Pop award by more than 56%,” said Folkman.
Several new performance and marketing programs will be added to The 11th IMAs currently accepting submissions at www.TheIndependentMusicAwards.com/ima/submit
