Florida State, Michigan Crack Down on Greek Life
The University of Michigan has suspended all social events for its fraternities and sororities. The move comes amid multiple reports of hazing and sexual assault. "As a Interfraternity Council community, we believe in holding our members to a high standard at the University of Michigan. It has come to our attention that some members of the IFC have not been living up to these standards," Alec Mayhan, the IFC executive vice president, said in a statement to The Detroit Free Press. About 1,000 miles away, FSU's chapter of Pi Kappa Phi was ordered by its national chapter to cease operations and shut down. Inside Higher Ed
Business Improvement Districts Help Cities Stay Ahead of the Curve
"These things have been around for 50 years. They've been proven to be a key element in downtowns and their success," says Ann Burke, VP of the Economic Development Council of Western Massachusetts. She's talking about business improvement districts (BIDs), which she says are an effective ways to create more vibrant downtowns. She helped craft and advocate for Massachusetts' BID legislation and has since helped to form several BIDs, which are referred to as Community Benefit Districts in the Bay State. From NYC to Boulder, C.O., each BID has its own personality. Sentinel Source
Oklahoma State Seeks to Raise Fire Safety Awareness Among Students
From 2000 to 2015, 85 on/off-campus fires across the country caused 118 fatalities, according to the U.S. Fire Administration website. This equates to seven fatal college fires per year. Seventy-six percent of the 85 fires occurred because alcohol was involved. One group that promotes fire safety awareness at OSU is the Fire Prevention Society. The organization has existed at OSU since its introduction in 1937, said Trevor Kukuk, FPS president. "The big hazards we see around campus especially are when it comes to cooking," Jared Whitlock, a firefighter and driver at Stillwater Station 2, said.
UBC Releases Draft of Freedom-of-Expression Statement, asks for Feedback
A day after saying it would not release the draft version of a new freedon-of-expression statement, the University of British Columbia has made the document public and asked the wider university community to provide feedback. The statement was drafted in response to a request by UBC president Santa Ono early this fall. A working group of 10 administrators and faculty collaborated on the document. Many U.S. and Canadian universities have issued statements on free speech in the past several years. A small group have adopted what have come to be known as the "Chicago Principles," after a statement drafted at the UC in 2015. The Globe and Mail
Town Gown Advisory Board Working to Improve BU, City Relations
As Binghamton University continues to expand downtown, the relationship between students and the community has become strained. A new committee is working to change that. The Town Gown Advisory Board met for the first time Wednesday night. It's a group of 34 city leaders, business owners and BU students. Their goal is to open dialogue and share resources. I think we have a good relationship, but there's room for improvement," said co-chair Randall Edouard. "I think we can do great things together. I think there's so much we can tap on if we communicate much more." The committee will meet three times per year. Spectrum News
