News & Updates | May 2021
Dear Friend,

On May 20, the Society of Jesus and the entire Ignatian family will begin the worldwide celebration of the Ignatian Year.

On that same date, exactly 500 years ago, St. Ignatius was wounded by a cannonball while defending the city of Pamplona. For him, it was a major failure and forced a change of plans from the riches and worldly exploits he had envisioned for his future. However, this failure also started a process of conversion, which led Ignatius to bigger dreams, no longer centered on himself, but rather on God. It helped him to see all things new in Christ.

As announced by Jesuit Father General Arturo Sosa in a letter announcing the Ignatian Year, we celebrate this year to remind us of the daily opportunity to experience conversion. It is a call to allow the Lord to reveal to us new ways of following Christ.

I invite you to begin the Ignatian Year with us in prayer on the evening of May 19, at our bilingual, online prayer service, "One Ignatian Community." There are also several other events and resources for the Ignatian Year listed below.

May the coming year truly help us "to see all things new in Christ!"

Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. George M. Witt, SJ
Executive Director
Office of Ignatian Spirituality

The Office of Ignatian Spirituality remains committed to working for racial justice. As a staff we continue to prayerfully discern our roles in both the perpetuation and the fight against systemic racism. We invite everyone in our community to join us in praying for conversion of heart and in discerning how to take action. Each month we share what is informing our prayer and conversation among our staff.
"Black Faith Matters"

The OIS staff recently watched and discussed this video. It's about 17 minutes long. We encourage you to watch it, too.

"The role of this documentary is to shed light on 'one story' of the Black Catholic experience. An experience unknown to many in our church. An experience that, although unique, is relatable to the Black Catholic, specifically African American Catholic, experience throughout America. This film hopes to bring out the joy, pain and struggles that are faced in the Black Catholic community, specifically in the Treme area of New Orleans. This film also hopes to share the unique struggle found in youth and young adult ministry within the Black Catholic community. Whether through 'America's Original Sin,' classism, or various other social ills, we are witnessing this unique expression of our Catholic faith disappearing before our eyes."

"Each of us will emerge from this year differently as we all are different people. This is a time of sifting, retaining what is good from the past, letting go of old habits and things that no longer serve us; taking from this time of trial new thoughts and ideas for ourselves and communities."
