Colorado Launches Medicaid Commission to Shape the Future of the Program
Colorado has launched a new bipartisan Medicaid Commission charged with examining the long-term sustainability of the state's Medicaid program and developing recommendations for future policy changes. The Commission will meet through December before submitting recommendations to state leaders.
Why Was the Commission Created?
For several years, Medicaid costs have grown faster than Colorado's available state revenue, creating increasing pressure on the state's budget. The Commission's mission is to identify ways to create a sustainable Medicaid program while continuing to protect the people who rely on it. Members have emphasized that their goal is not simply to reduce spending, but to identify opportunities that improve outcomes while making the best use of available resources.
What Will the Commission Examine?
Between now and December, and based on conversations had to date, the Commission plans to review topics that include the following:
- July – HR 1 requirements and the state funding cliff
- August (first meeting) – Medicaid cost structure and long-term services and supports
- August (second meeting)– Eligibility, enrollment and benefits
- September (first meeting) – Service delivery, payments, capitation, rates
- September (second meeting) – Financing Medicaid
- October (first meeting) – Public and stakeholder input
- October (second meeting)– Discussion of options
- November – Developing recommendations, draft report
- December – Report adoption
Upcoming Meeting Dates Are as Follows:
- July 28, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
- Aug. 5, same hours
- Aug. 18, same hours
- Sept. 17, time not yet set
Why Does This Matter to Our Community?
Many individuals and families supported by Imagine! rely on Medicaid-funded services that help people live independently, maintain employment, access healthcare, participate in their communities, and receive long-term supports.
While the Commission has not made any policy recommendations, its work will help shape future conversations about how Medicaid is funded and delivered in Colorado.
How Will the Public Be Involved?
The Commission plans to gather input through stakeholder sessions, public comment opportunities, written feedback, office hours, and regional meetings across Colorado.
Imagine! Is Following the Process
Imagine! will continue monitoring the Commission's work and sharing updates as recommendations begin to take shape later this year. We know Medicaid policy discussions can create uncertainty, and we're committed to keeping individuals, families, providers, and community partners informed throughout the process.
As this work continues, we encourage our community to stay connected, continue asking questions, and access updates and resources through our website here. You can also listen live to all meetings or see meeting materials on the Medicaid Commission Website here.
