Truly Magnificent: the Estrela de FURA Ruby!
Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels Results
|
|
What happened on Thursday morning at Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels auction in New York was nothing less than spectacular. A ruby of exceedingly fine quality in size and color came to the auction and set the all-time record for value. Selling for $34.8 million, the Estrela de FURA, a Mozambique ruby weighing an amazing jaw-dropping 55.22 carats, displaying vivid red color, and beautifully fashioned into a classic cushion design, set a new benchmark for all colored gemstones.

|
Exclusive interview post-auction with:
Dev Shetty
Founder & CEO FURA Gems
“We are very happy,” says an exuberant Dev Shetty, Founder & CEO of FURA Gems. “It’s a new world record for ruby... and any other colored gemstone! And now the benchmark has been set for the Mozambican ruby!”
And who wouldn't be happy? They just broke the world record for the most ever paid for a colored gemstone - $34.8 (including the buyers premium.)
With this highest price paid for a ruby, it places Mozambican Ruby in a category that is now comparable to Burmese. And with FURA's production in the millions of carats per year, this is a game changer for the entire jewelry industry.

Manmade Melee, and Russian "Smalls"
an exclusive interview with David Grunberger
|
|
David Grunberger of Grunberger Diamonds spoke to us about what it's like to be in the diamond melee business right now, with the manmade diamond discussion and the Russian diamond boycott.
We wanted to know if manmade melee is competing with the natural mined diamond melee market.
We also talked about the ban on Russian diamonds and how it is affecting the small goods sector.
Grunberger Diamonds: A Legacy Of Ideal Cut Diamonds
If you are unfamiliar with Grunberger diamonds, now is your chance to get familiar.
Grunberger specializes in small diamonds. Very small diamonds. While they carry larger than 0.15 ct., their specialty is concentrated in 0.15 ct. and smaller. As David says, “15 pointers down to 600 per carat.” That’s 600 stones per carat… or 0.0016 ct. each – roughly 1/6 of a point! And Ideal cut!

IGI Grades Bicolor Lab-Grown Diamonds
|
|
Rapaport
JUNE 4, 2023
LEAH MEIROVICH
The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has analyzed two lab-grown diamonds containing separate sections of blue and yellow coloring.
The bicolor stones were grown by Meylor Global, a Kyiv-based company, using High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT), IGI said Saturday. The first stone, a radiant-cut, 4.38-carat, VVS2-clarity polished diamond has a color described as fancy-deep-greenish blue. The 10.96-carat rough diamond also displays specific blue and yellow color zones, the lab noted. The stones’ coloring is a nod to Meylor’s home country of Ukraine.

The Extraordinary Colored Gems
|
|
There were so many extraordinary colored gems included in the Magnificent Jewels auction at Sotheby's that we decided to share as much as we could.
Here are some of the more important blue gems we captured.
This one, for example, a Cartier, Sapphire and Diamond Clip-Brooch, Paris. Designed as a flower, the petals are embellished with round and oval-shaped sapphires, the pistil and leaves accented by round diamonds, and the stem set with baguette diamonds. Signed Cartier Paris, and numbered HSA41285 and 013471, with French assay and maker’s marks; circa 1958. Even comes with a signed pouch.
