Summer Reading

Summer is in full swing! We hope you are having a wonderful time filled with fun and family.

Parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, big cousins, friends, and neighbors — JCSD needs your help getting students ready to hit the ground learning, as we venture into the 2023-2024 school year.

Are your children doing their summer reading?

Please make sure they are reading. Also, make sure that they are reading a book that stretches their reading abilities just a bit — not so much as to make them frustrated but enough to continue their growth as a reader.

A good way to determine if a book is “just right,” is to have the student read a page out of the prospective book. If there are only one or two words that the student doesn’t understand then that book is too easy. If there are two or three words, then that book is “just right.” If there are four or five words that they don’t understand, then it is better that they read it with a buddy, or you can read that book to them.

Did you know that reading aloud to young children is the single most important thing a caregiver can do to ensure reading success?

Reading aloud to your children has many benefits. My suggestion is to read a book that is above your child’s reading level but within their emotional level and ability to comprehend. Listening to a person read introduces kids to books above their level, is an opportunity to model good interpretive reading and teaches kids critical listening skills.

Curious about where to find good reads? The local library is a good start. Librarians are a great resource for kids especially when it comes down to trying to match a kid’s interest with particular books. Also, there are free books in there.

Magazines can be a great source of reading for those that have less ability to remain focused. Kids benefit from being exposed to diverse topics in short texts.

The following magazines are highly recommended especially for grades 3-5.

Cobblestone: American History for Kids — Ages 9-14

Ranger Rick: Wildlife adventures — Ages 7 - up

Sports Illustrated for Kids: Displays passion for sports — Ages 9 - up

Our students will be taking the ELA SC Ready State Assessment. Reading passages on the SC Ready Reading Assessment are similar to those found in these magazines and students benefit from having lots of experience with short texts.

We wish you the best with the rest of your summer. The JCSD family is looking forward to helping our students reach their full potential in the 2023-2024 school year.
