Ben's Byline

Hello. My name is Ben Hoffman, and I am an eighteen-year-old freshman at James Madison University. In my last byline, I discussed the NBA playoffs and what to expect. This month, I will be talking about the MLB playoffs.

The MLB wildcard has already ended, and this week is now the MLB division series. Eight teams are left in the playoffs, and there are great series. The best series to watch right now is the Los Angeles Dodgers vs the Philadelphia Phillies. These two teams are the best in their conference with great starting pitchers like Blake Snell and Christopher Sanchez. Not only that, but both teams have some of the best offenses in the league.

Another notable series is the matchup between the Detroit Tigers and the Seattle Mariners. While they may not appear as dominant as other teams, both feature strong starting pitchers: the Tigers have Cy Young candidate Tarik Skubal, and the Mariners boast Logan Gilbert along with one of the league's top bullpens. This series has the potential to showcase a pitching duel, unless hitters such as Cal Raleigh and Kerry Carpenter have significant offensive performances.

This year's MLB playoffs stand out because more teams seem confident and capable of contending for the championship than in previous years. While many expect National League teams like the Brewers, Phillies, and Dodgers to win the World Series, I believe the competitive landscape is too unpredictable to call. Personally, I'm rooting for the Mariners, a team with minimal playoff experience, to make a surprising run.

Which teams do you think have the best chance, and who will ultimately win it all?

Sanah's Sentiments

As an aspiring Data Analytics professional, I can’t help but notice how often data and sports intersect. From player and team performance trends to strategy and fan engagement. We all know how AI has transformed nearly every industry, but how has it reshaped sports, both on and off the field?

An article released by Forbes late last year discussed how AI’s ability to rapidly process massive datasets, identify patterns and outliers, and make real-time predictions is driving innovation across all levels of sport. It highlighted how AI is transforming the way athletes train, perform, and recover, tailoring insights to each player, team, and even their opponents. From hyper-personalized training plans that prevent injuries to nutrition optimization and game strategy recommendations, AI is enabling a level of customization that was once impossible. These advancements not only enhance athletic performance but also extend careers and elevate the overall quality of competition.

Next, how does AI tie into fan engagement?

The article emphasized that AI is changing the fan experience just as dramatically. By delivering personalized content and recommendations, from highlight reels and articles to merchandise suggestions, AI keeps fans connected to their favorite teams even off the field. It also powers intelligent chatbots that provide real-time updates, answer questions instantly, and create a more interactive, immersive experience. In short, AI is helping fans feel closer to the game than ever before.

It’s exciting to think how these same principles, real-time data, personalization, and predictive insight, could shape not just the future of sports, but the way we all experience entertainment and community.

How do you see AI changing the fan experience in the next five years?
