Law Enforcement Family Network (LEFN)

In this edition, we’re excited to feature Cassi Bartholomew, Program Specialist for Law Enforcement and Family Support at Behind the Badge Foundation. You’ve likely seen her on our social media, where she shares LEFN events, answers your questions, and offers new ways to stay connected—now, she’s here to share what LEFN means to her.

"As a career-changing family, we thought we had a pretty good idea of what to expect when my husband entered law enforcement. We knew it would be demanding, but we were determined to navigate the challenges together. Little did we know the reality was different than our expectations.

Emerging from the pandemic, we were both eager to embark on new chapters. I had recently completed my master's degree, and my husband had graduated from the academy. The transition was significant, but we were optimistic. I left my teaching position and joined Behind the Badge Foundation, where I found a sense of purpose and community.

Working on our online Resource Center and later LEFN, I had the privilege of connecting with other law enforcement families. Their experiences and guidance have been invaluable in both my professional and personal growth. These connections have helped me understand the unique challenges and joys of this LE lifestyle and have offered unwavering support.

When the world feels overwhelming, knowing I have a network of people who understand my law enforcement family life and can offer comfort is incredibly reassuring. It's a reminder that I'm not alone in this journey and that together, we can weather any storm.

If you're a law enforcement family member seeking connection, community, and support, I encourage you to explore groups like LEFN or similar groups in your area. These communities can provide a safe space to share experiences, find resources, and build lasting friendships. Remember, you're not alone either, and there are people who care about your officer and you."

- Cassi

September Survivor Connections

As part of our mission to support survivors, we organize events, gatherings, and meet-ups that foster connection and provide critical, compassionate support.

We hosted a meaningful event for the surviving parents of fallen officers. Parents had the chance to connect with each other during a nutritional and educational cooking class called 'Meals & Memories.' It offered a supportive space to honor their child by cooking and reflecting on the memories of shared meals. Since it took place in Olympia, we were able to visit the Memorial afterward and leave personal notes for our officers.

Through a generous donation, our men’s event this year was held at a Seattle Mariners game. It’s always a special gathering, as it creates a space for men to connect over various types of relationship losses—whether it's fathers, brothers, children, or others. A day at the ballpark offers the perfect blend of camaraderie, fun, and shared moments.

Congress designated Oct. 28 as National First Responders Day in 2017. The day honors the police officers, paramedics, EMTs, firefighters, and 911 operators who answer the call when a crisis arises, often putting their own lives on the line. Serving as a national day of gratitude, National First Responders Day pays tribute to their services to their communities and honors fallen first responders.

Our Resource Center offers a wide range of support for first responders, including resources on stress, mental health, and other important issues they face. Whether you're seeking guidance or professional help, our center is here to provide the tools and assistance you need.

We're quite excited that our Law Enforcement Family Network (LEFN) Conference is just around the corner! Join us at the ilani Resort & Casino for a weekend of learning from high-caliber presenters who will share insights on Finding Strength in your mind, body, parenting, relationships, and finances, with particular emphasis on the law enforcement family.

As we look ahead to 2025, we're eager to hear your ideas for future events. Please share your suggestions for our quarterly meet-ups.

Join us on December 6th at 4 PM at the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial in Olympia for the annual Holiday Wreath Laying Ceremony. As we enter the holiday season, we take time to honor the fallen officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their absence is felt deeply throughout the year, but often more so during the holiday season.

Come together with the community to pay tribute to those we've lost and to show our support for those who continue to serve.

We are proud to spotlight Sergeant John Correa of the Tacoma Police Department, a dedicated member of our Line of Duty Death Response Team (LoDDRT) since March 2021.

John's journey with Behind the Badge Foundation began during the memorial for TPD Officer Jake Gutierrez. The profound impact of Jake's death and the support from the community, and other agencies, opened John's eyes to the importance of BtBF. Since then, he has played key roles in logistics, planning, and operations for the Tacoma Police Department's Incident Management Team, assisting in memorial services for fallen officers.

Driven by a deep belief in the strength of the blue line family, John finds purpose in supporting the families and departments of fallen officers.

Outside his service, John enjoys traveling to warm places with his family, embarking on walking adventures with his kids, and attending baseball games together.

Join us in honoring Sergeant John Correa for his unwavering dedication and compassionate service. His work embodies the spirit of Behind the Badge Foundation, ensuring that the legacy of our fallen officers is preserved and their families are supported.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our incredible supporters for their unwavering generosity in hosting events, offering donations, and standing with us in our mission.
