EFFECTIVE 08.19.17:

An overlay is the addition of another are code to the same geographic area as an existing area code.  The new 838 area code is being added to the area served by the current 518 area code, highlighted below

This change simply means that you will need to enter the 10-digit phone number (including area code) whenever dialing a local number.  Your current phone number will not change; the price of a call will remain the same; and 911/311/411 calls aren't impacted.

Take a few minutes this month to update any contacts in your phone to include the full 10-digit phone number.
