Editorial: Adirondack land bank referendum good for New York

The Adirondack Forest Preserve would be enhanced by the creation of a 250-acre land bank.
Consider voting yes come election time.

New York state residents will have a chance to make government more efficient, protect the environment and improve infrastructure and communications in the Adirondacks and Catskills - all by filling in a little circle with a pen on  November's election ballot .

As one of their last acts of the 2017 session, lawmakers authorized a public vote on a constitutional amendment to create a 250-acre land bank for the Adirondack and Catskill parks.

By voting yes, voters will make it easier for communities to make infrastructure improvements in the most sensitive areas of the parks while ensuring the preservation of state land.

Story of 100 year Glens Falls Dry Cleaning Business Feigenbaum Cleaners

In their own words.... tales told of family pride in dry cleaning
CHICAGO - A young family man takes over the cleaning business in California. A second takes over the family business in upstate New York, having at first never envisioned being a drycleaning owner. A third proudly maintains the family name down in Texas. And all share one thing, the love of the business....

Todd Feigenbaum is the third-generation owner of  Feigenbaum Cleaners, with locations in Eastern New York state.

"My grandfather was a tailor who emigrated to New York City from Europe in 1902. After spending 15 years working in the sweatshops of the Lower East Side, he heard about a tailor shop for sale in upstate New York. He put his growing family on the train, and on the way to their final destination, they stopped in Glens Falls, a small town about 50 miles north of Albany," he says.

"Herman and Jennie Feigenbaum liked Glens Falls so much that they decided to stay and open a tailor shop there."

Glens Falls Indians prepare for title defense

GLENS FALLS , NY (WRGB)--For the first time in program history, Glens Falls has a state title to defend.

The Indians capped a perfect 2016 with their first-ever Class B crown, beating five-time champion Chenango Forks in a game much closer than the final score of 47-39 might indicate.

The longest-tenured defenseman in Flyers' franchise history, Chris Therien was drafted by the Flyers in the third round (47th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft. After playing three seasons for Providence College and a stint with the Canadian national team, Therien joined the Flyers for the lockout shortened 1994-95 season.

Even before Therien's longstanding defensive pairing with Eric Desjardins was formed by Terry Murray midway through Therien's third NHL season, the player nicknamed "Bundy" proved to be a mainstay on the Flyers' blueline.

Hoopes Family inspires gala giving

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The daughters of Samuel and Eliza Jane Pruyn grew up surrounded by the effects of their father's generosity and admiring his philanthropic spirit. Mr. Pruyn, the founder of Finch Paper, made significant contributions to the community in education, creation of a water system, and improved housing. The Pruyn daughters, Charlotte Pruyn Hyde (1867-1963), Nell Pruyn Cunningham (1876-1962), and Mary Pruyn Hoopes (1870-1952), stayed close throughout their lives, pursuing their love of the arts and carrying on their family's legacy of giving.

The Hyde Collection, founded on Mrs. Hyde's dedication to enriching lives with her art collection, has for years benefited from the Pruyn family descendants' generosity and support. The Museum is proud to announce the Hoopes family has donated $50,000 to kick-start contributions to the annual gala, The Hyde's biggest fundraising event of the year.

Emotions running high over City of Plattsburgh's consolidation plan

The city of Plattsburgh is moving forward with a plan to abolish some departments and absorb them into other parts of the city government.

Mayor Colin Read and other city leaders say it's a way of saving money and preventing major tax increases. At last week's meeting, the council updated the city codes to reflect the cuts, which were first approved last month. But a lot of people still had questions about how the plan will work.

Where the Jobs Are: The Fastest Growing Sectors for Manufacturing

The manufacturing sector has shown some growth over the past few years.  Since 2011, the sector has created jobs every year, a 6-year expansion that exceeds the 5-year expansion experienced 1994-1998, according to a new report from consulting firm Headlight Data. The report showed that the industry has created nearly 500,000 new jobs in the last 6 years.

This number should, however, be put in perspective, since the sector has lost 5 million jobs since 2000.

Within the sector, one of the brightest spots has been the automotive sector.
