November 30 and December 1
"The Island of Misfit Toys"
Isaiah 9:2-7
Rev. Gayla Rapp
Dear Asbury Friends,

This weekend in worship, we begin the season of Advent.  This season marks the beginning of the church year.  In our secular calendar, New Year's Day marks the beginning of the new year, but the church observes a different kind of calendar, and so our "New Year" begins with Advent.

This year for Advent, we are going to focus on "the light that shines in the darkness."  We need this light, especially during this season when the darkness is so dominant.  What is physically true, is also spiritually and emotionally true for some of us.  You may be struggling with the darkness of depression, loss, or uncertainty.  The Advent season helps us to confront that darkness and look for the light of God's love to shine.

I invite you to share this season of darkness and light with your church friends.  We need each other during these long dark days.  We need to remind each other that light is coming.  And we need to proclaim once again that the light shines in the darkness and the darkness will not overcome it.

Blessings,
Rev. Gayla Rapp,
Senior Pastor

Loss can make the Christmas Season feel different - whether it be the loss of a loved one, friend, a job, even an expectation.  If this is you, please consider attending the Blue Christmas Service of Memory and Hope on Sunday, December 15 at 3 pm in the Asbury Chapel.  This service is sponsored by Asbury's Stephen Ministers.  A time of conversation and refreshments in the Parlor will follow the service.
As we enter the season of Advent and remember the anticipation, joy, and excitement of the nativity story, we also remember the anticipation, joy, and excitement of the several new little ones in our congregation.  I invite you to celebrate this joy as the magi did: by bringing gifts!  We're having a nursery shower December 1 - December 22!  There are three ways to give: 1) Amazon gift cards, 2) cash/check, or 3) order from our Amazon wish list at http://a.co/hFe6pvq.  Let's make it a very merry Christmas for our nursery children and families!
