Accelerating Social, Academic and Health Equity

Dear JFS Friends, Supporters, and Collaborative Partners,
I hope this newsletter finds you and your families in good health. Before sharing updates from JFS, I want to acknowledge the terrible tragedies that have shaken our broader community in recent days—the horrific attack on the Jewish community of Sydney and the heartbreaking shootings at Brown University. We hold the victims, their families, and their communities in our prayers during this time of deep hardship and mourning, and we reaffirm our commitment to standing with all who are affected by violence and hatred.
As we close out an extraordinary year, I am thrilled to share the release of the 2025 JFS Report to the Community—a powerful reflection of what we have accomplished together and a clear-eyed look at the work ahead. This past year demanded resilience, creativity, and courage from all of us. With shifting policies, shrinking public dollars, and rising need across every part of our community, JFS has stepped forward with determination and heart—guided by our mission and strengthened by your partnership.
In the Report, Board President Ian Rubin and I reflect on a year of 'turning anxiety into action'—from standing with immigrants and asylum seekers to expanding older adult services, tackling healthcare access challenges, deepening food security work, and launching innovative housing solutions like Home-Share and ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units). We are proud that in a time of unprecedented need, JFS continued to serve more than 8,000 individuals with compassion, dignity, and measurable impact. This December, as we celebrate Hanukkah—the Festival of Lights—we are reminded that light is not something we only receive; it is something we generate together. And this year, your partnership has illuminated our community in remarkable ways.
Across Metrowest, JFS staff and volunteers are delivering hundreds of holiday packages and warm winter essentials; visiting isolated older older adults; supporting newcomers and immigrants and ensuring no one celebrates alone. These acts—large and small—are the sparks that sustain our community.
Our Holiday Gift Program is reaching newcomer and immigrant families with toys, books, winter clothing, and gift cards—offering comfort and dignity during a season that can feel overwhelming for families rebuilding their lives. And as federal uncertainty leaves many immigrant households in limbo, JFS continues to stand firmly on the front lines with case management, emergency assistance, school supports, and advocacy.
Loneliness among older adults peaks during the winter months. Thanks to your generosity, JFS is expanding home visits, companionship programs, and culturally sensitive care for Holocaust survivors and other vulnerable older adults. Your partnership truly becomes light during these moments.
Our collaborative work continues across the community—from school-based social services to food access programs to powerful cross-cultural gatherings such as the recent Testigos del Terror event at Brandeis University, which united Latino and Jewish communities around resilience, witness, and shared commitment.
As we look toward the end of 2025, your support matters more than ever. Every gift brings warmth to a child, connection to an older adult, stability to a family in crisis, and hope to someone navigating a difficult season.
Click here and make your tax-deductible year-end donation today. All gifts made before December 31st will be doubled!
I want to thank our amazing staff, board of directors, and volunteers that are the heroes of all our important work. And to are many collaborative partners that together make us a stronger motive force for good. JFS is indeed Staff Driven, Volunteered Powered, and Community Invested!
From our JFS family to yours, may this season bring light, compassion, and renewed hope. Thank you for strengthening our community and helping JFS continue to shine brightly for those who depend on us.
Warmly,

Dear JFS supporters and friends,
During this special holiday season, I am honored to extend my warmest wishes to each of you for a happy and healthy new year.
As I reflect on my first six months as JFS Board President, the feeling that rises above all else is gratitude—gratitude for being part of an organization defined by its dedicated staff, tireless volunteers, and generous supporters. This past year has brought significant challenges to our community, and once again JFS has demonstrated remarkable resilience, compassion, and the ability to pivot quickly to meet emerging needs.
Looking ahead, the next few years will be pivotal for those we serve. Under the leadership of Lino Covarrubias and his very capable executive leadership team, JFS continues to evolve—strengthening our business model, enhancing our organizational structure, and refining our financial strategy to ensure we can meet this moment with confidence and impact.
I am proud to share that our Board is deeply engaged and fully committed to supporting Lino and his executive leadership team as we navigate near term challenges together. We remain sharply focused on expanding support for older adults, strengthening food security initiatives, and advancing our immigrant services work—areas where JFS continues to play an essential role in the community.
We are also excited about the opportunities ahead. In 2026, JFS will further amplify its voice and visibility, leaning into our role as a community convener. We will take a leading position in bringing together organizations, partners, and stakeholders to combine our collective strengths, energy, and resources—creating impact that is truly greater than the sum of its parts.
In the coming year, JFS will also launch a comprehensive brand refresh. This initiative will examine how we communicate with our constituencies—our messaging, visual identity, website experience, and overall public presence—with the strategic goal of more clearly and powerfully conveying our work and its impact.
And as always, our success will rely on you—our ambassadors, donors, and volunteers. Your commitment enables us to pursue ambitious goals and extend our reach in 2026 and beyond.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me, to Lino, or to any member of the Board of Directors if you would like to learn more about JFS or explore ways to support our mission.
With best wishes,
| | Ian Rubin, Board President | | |
Behind every joyful holiday moment for the families we serve is the generosity of donors who care deeply.
As we move through this busy holiday season—working tirelessly to support individuals and families across our community—we want to pause and express our deepest gratitude to an extraordinary partner: the Holiday Dreams Foundation and the Gerber family. Their unwavering support helps ensure that the children we serve can experience the magic, comfort, and joy of the holidays.
Thanks to their generosity, JFS provided toys, warm coats, gift cards, and other essential items to dozens of client families through thoughtfully matched wish lists, helping to ease the emotional and financial strain the season can bring. These gifts are more than presents—they represent dignity, hope, and moments of genuine delight, often at a time when families need them most.

When a recent client lost both her housing and employment, she turned to JFS unsure of where else to go. Through the Family Assistance Network, supported by CJP, she received not only financial assistance but consistent guidance, advocacy, and emotional support from her case manager Abrielle Salloway.
With that steady partnership, she secured a new job and began working toward stable housing—milestones she credits to the holistic, compassionate support she received during one of the most difficult periods of her life.
"I can’t thank JFS and Abrielle enough for seeing me through one of the most difficult times in my life."
Stories like this remind us that stability is built through more than one-time help. It is created through trust, partnership, and a commitment to meeting people where they are—especially during moments of crisis.

Recently, JFS participated in a powerful and deeply moving event at Brandeis University: an exclusive screening of *7/10: Testigos del Terror* (10/7: Witnesses of Terror), a groundbreaking documentary chronicling the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023, through the voices of Israel’s Spanish-speaking Latin American community.
Hosted by JOTA (Jews of the Americas), the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University and Fuente Latina, the event was supported by a remarkable coalition of organizations including ADL, AJC New England, CJP, Israel Policy Forum, JFS, and several Brandeis University programs. Together, they brought community members, scholars, advocates, and allies into a shared space for reflection on loss, resilience, and the urgent work of building cross-cultural solidarity.
Following the screening, a panel discussion featured Dr. Dalia Wassner (Director, Jews of the Americas at Brandeis), Jessica Ghitis (Director of Outreach for Fuente Latina and co-executive producer of the film), and CEO Lino Covarrubias. Together, the panelists explored the historical and ongoing contributions of Latin American Jews to Israel and the unique moment we face today to deepen partnerships between the Latino, Jewish, and Latino-Jewish communities in the United States.
JFS extends its gratitude to JOTA, Fuente Latina, Brandeis University, and all partner organizations for hosting this meaningful event and for elevating the voices of survivors whose stories must never be forgotten.

Volunteer Department Update: Summer & Fall Highlights and What’s Ahead
Here’s a look at what’s been happening in the Volunteer Department over the past few months and what’s coming next!
A Season of Community Connection
This summer and fall, JFS of Metrowest had a vibrant presence at community fairs and outreach events across the Metrowest area. These events gave us meaningful opportunities to connect with community members, share our mission, and celebrate the impact of our programs, all made possible by our dedicated staff and volunteers.
Our volunteers were truly the heart of our outreach, greeting guests, sharing information, and representing JFS with warmth, compassion, and professionalism.
As we head toward the close of 2025, we want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible work, partnerships, and events that made this season so impactful for JFS and the communities we serve.

Backpack Events
Natick Library, Weston Library & The Rashi School (August 25–26)
With the incredible support of our volunteers, JFS hosted three Backpack Events this summer, serving over 100 participants. Families brought backpacks and filled 274 backpacks with school supplies for students in need throughout the community.
Most supplies were generously donated through our Amazon Wishlist, allowing community members to contribute meaningfully. Volunteers coordinated the flow of the events, organized supplies, and engaged with families to ensure every student left prepared for the school year. These events highlighted the generosity of our community and the dedication of our volunteers.

YALE Boots Drive
Harmony Grove, Framingham – October 16
To help ensure that young students are prepared to stay warm, active, and engaged at school, JFS once again partnered with the Yale Appliance Company, the Yale Appliance Foundation, and Framingham Public Schools to host a winter footwear distribution. This year the distribution event took place at the Harmony Grove Elementary School.
JFS distributed 250 pairs of winter boots to children in need during this successful event. Seven JFS volunteers worked alongside nine Yale staff members to sort boots, assist with sizing, and manage participant flow.
Thanks to careful coordination, families were able to pick up boots quickly and safely with minimal disruption to school traffic. The collaboration between volunteers and staff truly embodied the JFS spirit of service, and families expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support.

Community Care in Action: Cochituate Fire Response
This fall also reminded us of the profound role volunteers play during moments of crisis.
When a fire swept through a residence in Cochituate, families lost everything, their homes, belongings, and sense of security. In response, JFS staff, volunteers, and community partners came together quickly to provide essential resources, coordination, and compassionate support.
Jennifer Kadilak, Director of Resident Services at Maloney Properties, shared her gratitude, noting how the community “wrapped themselves around these families to hold them through this time of grief and loss.”
This response was a powerful example of what community care looks like in action, volunteers stepping in not only to meet immediate needs, but to offer dignity, presence, and hope when it mattered most.
