Accelerating Social, Academic and Health Equity
| |
Dear JFS Friends, Supporters, and Collaborative Partners,
The past month has been especially difficult as we work through the effects of the new Federal Administration's Executive Orders. For 45 years, JFS has remained steadfast in supporting the most vulnerable members of our community, upholding one of our core Jewish values: Welcoming the Stranger. The recent changes to Federal policies regarding immigrants and social services have had a devastating impact on the most vulnerable members of our community. A message was sent recently that detailed the funding needed for JFS to continue responding.
Specifically, these are the areas where we are raising funds to respond to the immigrant crisis:
Legal and Community Protection:
-
Protecting U.S. Citizen Children: Ensure that U.S. citizen children have the necessary paperwork, including U.S. passports.
-
Partnering with the Police to Safeguard the Community: Bring the police and the community together to ensure safety for all.
-
Know Your Rights Workshops: Multilingual workshops and information dissemination to ensure community members are informed of their rights.
-
Acceleration of Citizenship Applications: Pay to expedite the review process to achieve citizenship quickly.
-
Community Announcement System: Use technology to alert community members when danger is near.
-
Immigration Legal Support: Provide support for legal appeals and defense against misidentification.
-
Active Bystander Training: Train more active bystanders to respond to increasing incidents of hate and antisemitism in the community.
Housing:
-
Faith-based Welcoming (partnerships): Facilitate partnerships with organizations to provide shelter to vulnerable families.
-
Faith-based Welcoming (services): Help adapt houses of worship to accommodate the needs of families.
-
Welcome More Families: Help more vulnerable families find stable housing and prevent homelessness.
Basic Needs:
-
SNAP Benefits: Provide supplemental support to ensure low-income families do not go hungry.
-
Immigrant Loan Fund: Offer no-interest loans for immigrant families facing reductions in benefits.
Please consider contributing to these important crisis response areas - click here to make a donation online to the Crisis Response Fund or if you have a DAF (Donor Advised Fund), you can maximize the impact of your contribution by investing in JFS - search for JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE OF METROWEST INC, EIN number 04-2730898.
With each new Executive Order that weakens the social safety net, our resolve only grows stronger. We remain committed to providing essential services and standing alongside our partners to advance this work, ensuring that no family is left behind.
I am reminded that we have been here before in 2017. As the "immigration doors" closed in 2017 to refugees and other immigrants and migrants, I am proud to share a story of light and triumph we experienced resettling Syrian Refugees with a large Jewish community response and a wonderful partnership with The Shapiro Foundation (https://theshapirofoundation.org/). The impact of that partnership was captured in a nationally recognized Boston Globe series, Through the Closing Door, written by Jenna Russell and photographed by Suzanne Kreiter.
With our friends at Welcome Corps, we recently were able to help with the reunification of one of our 2017 Syrian refugee families with family members who made it through those again closing doors.
Amid the stress and uncertainty, there is still light to be found. At JFS, the dedication of our talented staff, Board, and committed volunteers allows us to make a meaningful impact every day, bringing help and hope to those who need it most.
In case you missed it, here are a few recent highlights of our impact in the community:
-
Exiting Families from Emergency Shelter: In March 2024, the Healey-Driscoll Administration launched a transformative initiative to support families in Emergency Assistance shelters, connecting them with resettlement agencies to secure stable housing and employment. As one of eight agencies partnering with the Commonwealth, JFS has already helped over 41 families move out of the shelter system and into homes of their own. Click here to learn more.
-
JFS Homecare Program: We provide in-home services to medically compromised older adults, allowing them to live safely and with dignity. Due to a shortage of qualified personnel, hundreds of people are waiting for services. To address this, JFS piloted an innovative Immigrant Home Health Career Program that offers advanced certification to entry-level personnel. Click here to learn more.
-
Jewish Family Assistance: Our case managers receive calls every day from community members in crisis. For example, when Samantha, a 62-year-old community member caring for her adult disabled daughter, was referred to JFS, she was struggling to pay rent and manage other bills. Her case manager helped her budget, connected her with services, referred her to our partners for supplemental support, and helped her find affordable housing. Click here to learn more.
-
Winter Boot Distribution: JFS, in collaboration with the Yale Appliance Company, the Yale Appliance Foundation, and the Framingham Public Schools, hosted a winter boot distribution event at the Farley Middle School, providing winter footwear to over 250 children. Click here to learn more.
-
MetroWest Care Connection: For the last 4 years, the MetroWest Care Connection has coordinated an Adult Resource Fair in downtown Framingham, where participating agencies provide essential education and health services, complimentary haircuts, and free COVID-19 and flu vaccinations. JFS was honored to take part once again, providing hundreds of warm, essential seasonal clothing items to guests, free of charge. Click here to learn more.
-
Home-Share Program: To address the affordable housing shortage, JFS as piloted an innovative Home-Share program. This program connects individuals with extra space in their homes to those in need of affordable housing. Launched in 2023, this program has helped many individuals in need. Click here to learn more.
These inspiring stories of impact reinforce the importance of our work and the passion that drives us every day. But we can’t do it alone. If you’re not yet part of the JFS family, there are many ways to get involved:
-

A Message from Board President
Allison Kates
I hope this message finds you all warm and healthy. I think it’s safe to say that the winter doldrums have hit. I heard a snippet on the news last night that so far, December, January, and February have had below average temperatures. If we end February on this same path, it will be the first time since 2013 that all three winter months have been below average. That’s twelve years. That’s a long time. When you take the perpetually gray skies and cold temperatures and throw in driveways that are more like ice rinks and so so many germs, and then consider the current state of the world, it’s no wonder this winter has felt endless (can you tell I don’t really prefer winter?).

A good friend of mine has written a soon-to-be-published book about finding awe in the everyday. Since the start of the year, she’s been on a mission to find something every day that brings her that feeling of awe, whether it’s freshly fallen snow, the shape of a cloud in the sky, or something one of her kids said or did. I was chatting with a different friend the other night and she mentioned that one of the best ways to cope with stress is to find little things to appreciate, like someone holding a door open for you or your favorite song coming on the radio. I’m sensing a theme here…
This got me thinking about all the ways that JFS continues to be a shining light during the dark and dreary winter and all the ways that I appreciate this organization. Here are a few:
- Board members and JFS volunteers have recently hosted gatherings in their homes or local restaurants to introduce new people to JFS. During these gatherings, attendees learned about one of our programs and completed a project (like assembling a care package) to give to our clients. One of these gatherings had over 20 people in attendance!
- A longtime volunteer at one of our partner organizations recently provided handmade blankets that she crafted along with residents at the senior living facility to give to families in need to keep them warm during the winter months.
- Our board nominations process is fully underway and again this year, there is no shortage of qualified candidates from various backgrounds and professional experiences who are interested in being a part of the work we do. I’m always amazed at how many people are committed to helping us carry out our mission.
- Recently, I’ve introduced several friends to JFS and they all want to contribute to the organization in some way – as we like to say, whatever keeps you up at night, we have a program for that and there is some aspect of our work that resonates with everyone I talk to. The fact that so many people want to support the work we do totally leaves me with a sense of awe.
Even during these long days of winter, there is always something to be awed by, something to bring us a sense of hope, and something to appreciate. I hope you continue to find awe in the everyday and remember, spring is just around the corner.
In partnership,

Black History Month is more than just a time of reflection—it is a powerful celebration of the achievements, resilience, and contributions of African Americans throughout history.
At JFS, we are proud to stand in solidarity with those working toward a more just, inclusive, and equitable society. As we honor Black history, we also recommit ourselves to fostering a future where diversity is celebrated, opportunities are accessible to all, and justice is truly realized.
Let us use this month as an opportunity to learn, reflect, and take meaningful action in support of racial equity—because Black history is American history, and its legacy continues to inspire us all.

JFS was honored to welcome Diane Kaplowitz, a dedicated volunteer from Hebrew SeniorLife’s NewBridge on the Charles. For months, Diane and the residents have lovingly crafted handmade blankets to bring warmth and comfort to families in need. With this winter’s extreme cold, these blankets will be quickly distributed to those facing hardship.
A huge thank you to Diane and the compassionate NewBridge residents for their kindness and support.
Your generosity truly makes a difference!

We face an urgent challenge - protect as many lives as possible, right now, while we still can.

Since 1979, JFS has been instrumental in resettling hundreds of refugee families in the Metrowest Greater Boston area. Key to our success has been the involvement of our organizational partners and volunteers who have joined with us to surround these newcomers with the supports they need to acclimate and build a life in our welcoming and caring community.
The demand for these services is at an all time high. In order for JFS to meet the demand, we seek organizational sponsors to provide the ultimate welcome to a newly arrived refugee family.
Sponsors serve as supporters, mentors and teachers and are critical in the process of helping a family adapt to their new surroundings and work towards self-sufficiency. No experience needed – when sponsors partner with JFS they receive the training and ongoing support they need to be successful.
Partner with JFS and be a bridge to a brighter future for a refugee family in need. Click here to learn how you can get involved today.

JFS Supports Our Veterans
WANT TO MAKE A MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCE? VOLUNTEER!
Since 1979, newly arrived refugees, asylees, and their families have received assistance from JFS. For many of these families, low wages, language barriers and limited experience with American systems are some of the challenges they face. As they work to rebuild their lives, they have the best chance for success when they have support from a caring and involved community.
While our case managers work hard to connect families with essential resources and ensure their basic needs are met, there is much more that we can offer with the assistance of dedicated volunteers.
We are currently building teams of volunteers to provide hands-on support and guidance for these families as they adjust to their new lives in the U.S. and work towards self-sufficiency. Whether you have a few hours a week or a few hours a month, we have a role for you.
How You Can Help
JFS seeks volunteers to serve as:
-
Team Leaders – Organize and coordinate volunteer efforts with case managers, identifying client needs and mobilizing the team to provide support.
-
Team Mentors – Work one-on-one with clients on specific goals, such as improving English language skills, securing employment, navigating public transportation, or managing healthcare needs.
-
Team Helpers – Lend a hand with one-time or occasional tasks, such as accompanying clients to doctor’s appointments, helping with grocery shopping, or providing transportation.
In particular, we are in need of volunteers to work with families who are living in the areas of Needham and Brookline.
Regardless of your experience or availability, if you are new to JFS or a long time volunteer, there’s a place for you to make a meaningful impact. You’ll receive all the training and ongoing support necessary to be successful and make a lasting difference in these families’ lives.
Now is the time to act. Your support can truly help these families take the crucial first steps toward self-sufficiency and a brighter future.
