Dear JFS Friends, Supporters, and Collaborative Partners,
A few weeks ago, at Seize the Dream, I stood in a room filled with people like you — people who believe in something bigger than themselves. It was an evening full of joy and hope, but also one grounded in urgency..
Right now, we are facing some of the most challenging times I’ve seen in my 17 years with JFS. I have never been more nervous and concerned. Across our community, we see the impact of shrinking protections and harsh public policies. Families concerned for their safety regardless of their documentation status. Older adults aging alone. Children caught in the crosshairs of uncertainty.
And yet, in the face of these challenges, there is still hope — because of you.
Together, we are:
✅ Helping families rebuild from scratch
✅ Supporting older adults to age with dignity and connection
✅ Empowering immigrants (refugees, asylum seekers, and others) to not just survive, but thrive — like Abdulkadar Hayani, a Syrian refugee we welcomed in 2016 who last month opened his own tailor shop in Natick.
These successes don’t happen by accident. They happen because of action — your action.
JFS is built for times like these. We are fast, flexible, and deeply accountable. With 45 years of trust behind us and a 4-star Charity Navigator rating, we are positioned to respond quickly — but we cannot do it alone.
The stakes have never been higher.
Federal support is shrinking. The Common Wealth’s cannot cover all the gaps. Needs are growing. And every day, more families, immigrants, and older adults come to our doors looking for help, for safety, for a lifeline.
We need you with us. Here’s how you can make an immediate impact:
Your support is not just charity — it’s solidarity. It’s what allows us to offer multilingual Know Your Rights workshops, connect families with legal services, protect U.S. citizen children, and ensure no one goes hungry.
Nearly half the people we serve are from outside the Jewish community, but we are rooted in Jewish values that call us to care for the stranger, the vulnerable, the neighbor in need. This is the work we are called to do — and we need you beside us to keep doing it.
If you’ve been part of this journey with JFS, thank you — your ongoing support powers our mission. If you’re ready to deepen your involvement, now is the time. Together, we can turn compassion into action, and possibility into lasting change.
Let’s keep going. Let’s keep building. Let’s keep believing in what’s possible — together.
With gratitude and hope,

A Message from Board President
Allison Kates
Dear JFS supporters and friends,
It is hard to believe that this is my last President’s Corner newsletter. I remember back in 2019 when former JFS CEO Marc Jacobs called me to ask if he could come to my home. He didn’t tell me what the meeting was about so I was left to speculate – I never imagined that he’d be asking me to agree to be Board President.

The plan was for me to be installed in 2022 (but was delayed a year thanks to COVID). It seemed so far away and I was so caught off guard that I immediately said yes without even thinking about it. When I told my husband about the conversation later that night, he confidently - and proudly - said, “I had a feeling that’s why he wanted to talk to you.”
Fast forward six years and now my two-year term is about to end. During my tenure, we’ve installed seven new board members, including two new youth members who will replace the youth members who’ve served for the last two years. We’ve had over 400 people in attendance at Seize the Dream for each of the last two years, where we’ve honored the most deserving individuals and foundations serving our community. We now have over 100 community partners and more than 300 active volunteers. We’ve seen our budget grow significantly so that we could provide even more support to the most vulnerable. We’ve hired new staff to meet the ever growing needs of our clients and even our office space has grown, with the opening of the Innovation Center and new digs for our Homecare program on the second floor of the JFS building. I think we can all agree that so much good has been happening!
However, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge how challenging recent months have been for our clients, and also for our staff who support them. Decreases in funding combined with new executive orders have made for a very stressful five months. Yet no matter how tough times have gotten, JFS is there. JFS has mobilized other social service agencies to provide Know Your Rights sessions, advocacy, and legal support for immigrants and refugees. We’ve worked hard to find housing for those who are homeless or living in shelters and our successful Home-Share program is something to be celebrated. I’m sure that things will get worse before they get better, but I sleep well at night knowing that JFS is there to jump in whenever and wherever they are needed.
The end of my term is bittersweet. It has been such an honor and a privilege to lead this group of passionate, enthusiastic, accomplished individuals who are all deeply committed to carrying out the JFS mission. Being President of the JFS Board has truly been a wonderful experience. It has given me the courage to advocate for those in need and helped me to realize that together we can make a difference. It has opened my eyes to the struggles of so many in our community and also to the unwavering dedication of those who support those people. Although I’m sad that my term is ending, I won’t be going too far away and I am confident that I’m leaving the board in capable hands.
I’m so grateful to have been given this opportunity and I thank you for sharing this journey with me.
In partnership,

Last week, we wrapped up the final session of this year’s JFS/Rashi Learning & Leadership Council—a powerful partnership between JFS of Metrowest and The Rashi School that empowers middle school students to lead with empathy and purpose.
From exploring antisemitism and mental health to hands-on volunteer work, these students engaged deeply with real-world issues. Our final session featured inspiring insights from Barry Shrage, who challenged students to ask: What do you care about, and how can you make a difference?
Thank you to The Rashi School and Barry Shrage for helping us nurture the next generation of Jewish leaders!

This month JFS of Metrowest proudly celebrated the graduation of the first cohort from our Immigrant Workforce Development Pilot Program—an initiative funded by the MetroWest Health Foundation.
This program equips work-eligible immigrants with paid training to become certified personal care homemakers—addressing economic inequity and the critical shortage of home health workers.
Eight inspiring women completed the program, now prepared to deliver compassionate, essential care to our aging community. Their achievement marks more than a milestone—it’s a step toward a more inclusive, equitable care system.
Congratulations to the graduates, and thank you to MetroWest Health Foundation for making this possible!

At JFS, we’re committed to breaking stigma, supporting early access to care, and honoring the resilience of those living with mental health conditions.
