Crops that are tough as turf 

In the season 4 launch of our Genome Insider podcast, host Menaka Wilhelm talks to researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln working with Seashore paspalum — the same species of grass used for the 2022 World Cup turf in Qatar.

It turns out that paspalum can handle more than a beating from soccer cleats: It’s incredibly hardy, and it holds clues about how to turn its relatives (like maize and sorghum) into more resilient crops. Tune in and subscribe to learn more! 
Open Proposal Calls
The next deadline for our Functional Genomics call, which looks for DOE mission-aligned proposals that translate genomic information into biological function, is July 31. 

The next deadline for our New Investigator call, which looks for DOE mission-aligned proposals from PIs who have not led any previously-accepted proposals, is Sept. 4.

Upcoming Partner Events
The Molecular Foundry will hold its 2023 User Meeting both virtually and in-person from Aug. 10-11. The conference focuses on frontier research topics in nanoscience.
Advanced Light Source will host its hybrid annual meeting Sept. 11-15, onsite at Berkeley Lab. Click for more information.

The Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory’s annual meeting will be held Oct. 3-5. This year's theme is "Visualizing Chemical Processes Across the Environment."

Topics will include biological cartography, spatially resolved integrative omics, and multimodal imaging.

The hybrid meeting will be held in-person at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
