The Shearwater Flag Flies Again!

Immediately after September 11, 2001, a day all of us remember, Conrad Schalk, a Shearwater resident since 1996, put together a “make-shift” flag pole out of two pieces of pipe and hoisted an American flag in front of his residence at #3926 Shearwater Drive in support of his country. Every morning Connie hoisted his flag and every evening he took it down. For over 9 years the Shearwater flag flew on the makeshift flag pole until, in 2010, 8 Shearwater homeowners decided Connie should have a proper flag pole as a reward for his daily effort. Thus, in 2010, a new flag pole was installed in place of the old and Connie was presented with a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. For almost 18 years, the Shearwater flag was flown proudly in front of the Schalk residence until, on July 15, 2019, Connie Schalk, a true American patriot, passed away just short of his 90 th birthday.
The Shearwater Board of Directors, knowing that the family would be selling the property, requested they be allowed to move the flag and flag pole to a common area, to be illuminated at night and flown 24/7 in honor of Connie and his patriotic efforts.
The family agreed, and on October 23 rd in the presence of many Shearwater residents and family members who had come to Jupiter especially for the dedication ceremony, the Shearwater flag was raised again by three family members with the assistance of the two JL Security guards who had folded the flag in the proper military manner and presented the family with the last flag Connie had flown over Shearwater.
