The Jack Campion Stage at Hudson Catholic
Inaugurates The
Campus Naming Opportunities Program
| |
|
About the very best way that we could launch and promote the Hudson Catholic Naming Opportunities Program is to announce that our stage, housed in the Rocky Pope Gymnasium, will be named The Jack Campion Stage at Hudson Catholic.
Jack was a venerable faculty member, English teacher, Drama Club founder & moderator, and Director of a number of HC stage productions over the course of 1966 - 1981, including Kiss Me Kate, Brigadoon, and Guys and Dolls.
A dinner in tribute to Jack Campion and to celebrate the occasion and laurels is planned for the spring, fittingly at a time to coincide with this year's planned school production, to be directed by current Drama Club Moderator, Sarah Degnan-Barbi, Assistant Principal, who during her school days at St. Dominic Academy, appeared in 1994 and 1995 Jack Campion productions on the stage of another local boys school.
The Jack Campion Stage at Hudson Catholic is the first such naming among a host of opportunities to honor prominent individuals and beloved family names and members, among a variety of classrooms and other facilities on the Hudson Catholic campus.
Contact Chief Advancement Officer Gary Ferrari at 201-888-6276 or gferrari@hudsoncatholic.org to express interest or seek further information.

BRIAN ALTANO RETURNS
A Comedy and Storytelling Show
Join us for an evening with Brian Altano, Hudson Catholic Alum ('74) and World-Renowned Storyteller, as he brings his hilarious comedy show home. Brian, a writer and professor for more than 30 years, has told his original stories on radio and television and at theaters in Italy, Austria, Venezuela, Mexico, Morocco, France, and Spain, and across the United States in New York, Miami, Chicago, Seattle, Fort Worth, Austin, Cleveland, and throughout New Jersey. He is the author of 15 books, many of which contain his short fiction.
Brian is bringing along his son, Dan Altano, an award-winning standup comedian, to get the laughter started. Dan has carved a name for himself in the national comedy scene by narrating his life story with brutal honesty, wit, and heart. Dan headlines in clubs and theaters across the country, recently completing a five-state headlining tour. He was recently named one of New York City’s “Breakout Artists” by Caroline’s On Broadway and has appeared in the annual New York Comedy Festival for the past three years. Dan is also the host of the comedy/cooking show Dinner’s Ready Live.
Audience members will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions of the performers after the show.

About 40 venerable Hawks ranging from '69 through '94 made it to HATS II on Saturday, August 27th, to top off their summer fun. Highlights: Dennis Dussman '72, all the way from Fairbanks, Alaska; Brother Tim Ahern holding a Q&A session about the Christian Brothers, with updates about individual FSC; and Lou Manzo '73 singing the National Anthem and signing copies of his book An Irish Lullaby. Principally Speaking
Of course, as with any article that centers around a list or a common attribute, we invariably leave someone, or many someones out, because we really do not know how expansive the list is to begin with. Consequently, we hope to draw others into the conversation through sharing what is known in the Hawk metaverse!
And so it goes that other Hawks have reported to the Principal's Office over the years, notably Joe Appruzzese '96 (right under our nose at the All Hawk Happy Hour) who is presently in the chair at PS #6 in Jersey City since January 2019, after having served as Assistant Principal from 2014 to 2018.
Joe Galano '83, was also a JCPS Principal, at #27 Alfred E. Zampella Elementary School from 2010 to 2019, and now serves as Director of Elementary Schools for the Jersey City Public Schools.
And Joe Zaluski '72, who served as Head of School at Miami Valley Lower School (Dayton, OH) from 1979 to 1988, at the Sewickly (PA) Academy Lower School from 1988 to 2015, and at Gulf Stream (FLA) School from 2015 to 2019, retiring from that role in 2019. By our count, that is 41 years straight of leading schools, which appears to be the unofficial record for a Hawk with most number of years serving as a Principal.

Catching Up with Our Pioneer Girls
|
Kristy Fernandez ’10 was the second girl to receive a diploma from Hudson Catholic, choosing to attend Seton Hall University where she earned A Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing.
She began working in a subacute rehabilitation center and then moved to the acute care setting, working as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit, where she found a passion for Trauma and Critical Care medicine.
A lot of learning and a whole pandemic later, she decided it was time to start working towards a Doctorate in Nursing Practice so she could care for patients in a different capacity.
In Fall 2021, she was accepted to Rutgers University’s Adult-Gerontology Acute Care DNP program, and has been working and attending school full time since then.
Somewhere in that mix, she found time to maintain her best friendships with some of the other girls in her graduating class and even had the privilege of being Maid of Honor in two of their weddings!
To this day, they look back at their one year at Hudson Catholic with gratitude and fondness. It brought them much closer together, gave her best friend her wonderful husband, and most importantly, taught them that change can be scary and challenging…but it can also be worth it.

Hall of Famer Jack Curry '82 just appears to be everywhere lately. As a NY Yankees Beat Writer and Baseball Editor at the NY Times, and as Game Analyst for the YES Network, he covered Derek Jeter's entire career and co-authored "The Life You Imagine" with Jeter 20 years ago. So it only seems fitting that Jack would be interviewed for "The Captain", the documentary that aired recently on ESPN.

Larry Costanza '76 and Mike O'Koren '76 recently paid a visit to ailing Mike "Mooney" Ryan '83 and his wife, Susan.

NICE SHIRT! Phil Carbonaro '75 stopped by the Hawks Nest to pick up his Hawk gear and tour the school with Terry Matthews.

Through a compilations of responses to BTL and on our social media sites, we've pieced together the identities of this faculty team, which many alums are calling a truly outstanding staff.
At the Front Table are Mr. Dan Kelleher, the late Mr. Tim Eigo, Mr. Mario Pascarello. Back Table: Ms. Joan Finn, Mrs. Rose Perry, the late Brother Bart Schlachter, a youthful Mr. Terence Matthews. Standing, L. to R.: the late Mr. Joe Pace (identified by glasses in shirt pocket), Fr. Steven Kopacz, Mr. Jim O'Donnell '69, Sister Eleanor Eustich, ????? far in back (answers to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org), Mr. Jess Tarado, the late Mr. James Quirke.
| | |
|
Again, through a compilation of responses to BTL and postings on our social media sites, it has been determined with a high degree of certainty (from those who were there), that the photo of the School Walkathon that appeared in BTL64 was taken in 1989.
The above photo, culled from the '89 Hawk Yearbook, spills the beans, as it is depicting celebration of Hudson Catholic's 25th Anniversary Year, 1964-1989.
