"I will come again ..."
In the hours leading up to his passion, Jesus gathers his apostles and prepares them for his departure -- first to the cross and then, after his resurrection, into heaven. But he makes a bold promise: "I will come again" (John 14:3). It's a promise Jesus' disciples struggle to understand. Yet Jesus sets the stage for his glorious appearance one day in which he recaptures the world, vanquishes his foes, and sets everything right.

Two statements about Jesus' return in John's Gospel
Two statements by Jesus in the Gospel of John set the stage for the Savior's glorious return. In John 14:1-6, Jesus tells us he is making things ready in heaven for us and, like a faithful bridegroom, will come to fetch his Church one day. In John 21:20-23, he urges his followers, who do not know the time of his return, to engage in service until he comes for us.

The Son of Man and the return of Jesus
Many of Jesus' teachings on the second coming revolve around his favorite self-designation: Son of Man. In fact, Jesus uses the title Son of Man some 80 times in the Gospels to refer to himself. The title communicates the fact that Jesus willingly shares humanity with us. It also boldly reveals Jesus as the divine being of Daniel 7:13-14.

Trinitarian praise for our salvation
Since the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit constitute one divine being - one God - the work of salvation is shared among the members of the Trinity. No single member delivers all the elements of salvation, but together they accomplish all the work that produces salvation.
