What Can I Do?
State of the Art Jewelry Summit
The first in a series of reviews
|
|
Gary Roskin
Roskin Gem News Report
On Friday June 23rd, at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the first annual Jewelry Summit took place, co-hosted by the Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC), the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and Harvard’s Mineralogical & Geological Museum (MGMH).
Like most gem & jewelry conferences, this one had discussions revolving around sourcing, and social responsibility.
But this conference, this jewelry summit, considered the big picture. They discussed why we should get involved in improving economic growth for all, ending poverty and hunger, and converting to affordable clean energy, reducing global inequalities, and more. It made you think that you can be something more than just a small player in the jewelry industry.
For one day, this was quite a lot to take in… it was mindful, and it was serious.
And it will be more than just one feature story here.

Chromium Surface Diffusion
a Trade Alert
|
|
Jeffery Bergman, ASG SGC
EighthDimensionGems
First documented by the GIA in the early 1990’s, colorless to near-colorless faceted transparent natural sapphires were subjected to high-temperature (1800C+) chromium ion surface diffusion to induce a ruby red color.
This treatment has been virtually absent from the Bangkok market for decades. Until recently.
This exceptional 7+ carat example represented as new production was recently purchased from a broker in Bangkok who properly disclosed its treatment.
However, due to the high potential of misrepresentation, we have issued a TRADE ALERT. - JB

10 of the World’s Most
Controversial Gemstones
|
|
“Gems have been coveted for thousands of years—hoarded by rulers, looted by opportunists, used as bargaining chips by the desperate, and deployed in portraiture to signify wealth and status.
Individual gems, inherited through generations, have dense and illustrious histories of passing between allies and foes that sometimes add to their value and allure. But many of the world’s most famous jewels hide a controversial or mysterious past behind their glittering façades.” – Mental Floss
The 10 most controversial gemstones (according to Mental Floss) are:

It’s a world first, gifted to watchmaking’s most illustrious charity. It’s a technological achievement. It’s the acknowledgment of a deep and fruitful partnership between Jacob & Co. and Concepto Watch Factory. It’s proof that being “Inspired by the impossible” makes the impossible come true.
Astronomia Revolution 4th Dimension is fitted with a triple-axis flying tourbillon at the end of a two-arm carousel. It rotates every 60 seconds.
This makes it a four-axis tourbillon, the first ever of its kind fitted in a wristwatch.

The State of the Art Jewelry Summit, "the Jewelry Summit," will be a strong part of our coverage over the next few months. We will be reporting on each important panel discussion, following up with many of the panelists, and trying to present actions that the industry can implement. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, there are so many other newsworthy items to catch up on. For one, I am finishing up Tom Chatham's book, The Chatham Legacy: An American Story. I will be reviewing that next week. Spoiler alert - it's an absolutely enjoyable read that has made me burst out laughing several times!
