The Job Nobody Trained You For

by Kelly Martin, Director of Outreach/Caregiver Support

Hi! I’m Kelly, and I’m new here. I’ve been the “new girl” many times in my life, and it’s hard every time. I applied for this job, interviewed for the position, and accepted the role because I wanted to be the BCSSI Director of Outreach and Caregiver Support. Still, there’s so much to learn! I’m fortunate to have time to learn from Jessica Evans before she retires, and I know I have a supportive team behind me.

Now imagine starting a job with no training, no instruction manual, and no orientation period, but with serious responsibilities. That’s often the reality for caregivers. Few people apply for caregiving, and most receive little or no training. Instead, they learn as they go, which can bring fear, doubt, and uncertainty. Like anyone starting a new job, caregivers may wonder if they’re capable, learning quickly enough, or doing a good job. When caregiving begins suddenly, feeling unprepared is normal.

A good place to start is getting organized. Writing things down - lists, notes, ideas, and important facts - can help you feel more focused and confident. Next, identify your support team. Reach out to family and friends to share the load. People want to help; sometimes, you just have to let them! Explore the resources available in your community, too. BCSSI offers valuable support through our Caregiver Navigator, which will help you organize your loved one's healthcare journey, and our Caregiver Support Group, where you can connect with others who understand.

You don’t have to do this job alone, and you don’t have to be an expert. Keep showing up, asking questions, and learning as you go. That’s what I’ll do in my new role, and if you’re new to caregiving, I encourage you to do the same.

Peace & Ease,

Kelly

Tips & Inspiration

The Heart of a Caregiver

Sharing the journey, wisdom and the heart behind our caregivers.

Sharing the journey, wisdom and the heart behind our caregivers.

If you'd like to share a piece of your caregiving story, a lesson you've learned or a tip that might encourage another caregiver, we would love to hear from you.

Only 5 questions...

You can share as much or as little as you’d like...

there’s no right or wrong answers.

  • How did you become a caregiver for your loved one?

  • What advice or tip you would give a fellow caregiver?

  • What has caregiving taught you?

  • What has been the most rewarding part of caregiving?

  • What has been your greatest challenge as a caregiver?

Caregivers have so much wisdom to share.

Your story might be exactly what another caregiver needs to hear.

Thanks for all you do...seen & unseen!
