April 2022

Greetings from the Executive Director

Dear Lindsey,

In this season of renewal and light, Sojourner House has much to celebrate. We are especially grateful for the friends and donors who have made so much possible this season.

We are happy to share that Sojourner House MOMS received a major gift of $100,000 from the Mary Jennings Hillman Foundation in support of our programmatic work in the 2021-22 fiscal year.

In addition, as we mark our 30th year, we have turned our focus to creating enhanced learning and play spaces at MOMS Green. This work is possible thanks to grants from the Grable Foundation, Greater Pittsburgh Rotary, and our partner organization, the Homeless Children’s Education Fund (HCEF). We are grateful to all the organizations and individuals who have contributed to this vital restoration of our outdoor space on Hays Street.

April is also Tea Month! Our most recent annual Victorian Tea featured special tea kits that Sojourner House supporters used during DIY tea gatherings.

And just in time for National Volunteer Month, many of our friends who donate their time joined us in-person once again this month.

This full range of monetary, in-kind, and volunteer support all ensures that Sojourner House is able to support our parents in recovery and their children. Thanks to you, our gratitude is flowing abundantly this month, and our staff raises their tea cups to each of you.

Blessings,

De’netta Benjamin-Miller, LCSW

Executive Director

A Year of Resilience and Endurance

We're happy to announce that our latest annual report is now available to all! The Sojourner House annual report highlights our accomplishments, shares stories of recovery, and thanks the generous donors and volunteers who helped our staff and supported our mission during the COVID-19 pandemic. The report offers a look back at a time of resilience and endurance for Sojourner House, and we hope you will join us in celebrating our victories during this time of uncertainty.

Volunteers In Action

During National Volunteer Month, Sojourner House celebrated the return of in-person volunteering! We cannot thank our volunteers enough for putting their hands and hearts to work on behalf of our families.

At MOMS Green — our outdoor space on Hays Street — a major improvement project was kicked off on April 2 by a team from Greater Pittsburgh Rotary, led by Cherie Moshier of Moshier Studio. The Rotary is joined by the Homeless Children’s Education Fund and the Grable Foundation as lead donors for this project, along with many individual friends of Sojourner House who responded to a call for support.

Thanks to the efforts of Rotary’s volunteers, a new learning shed is ready for spring and summer activities. The shed has been power washed and painted, while an aging sandbox was removed. Next up are the new interactive activity center and the long-awaited shelter, which will offer gathering spaces for education and celebrations. We can’t wait for the next level of improvements, including plantings and some surprises.

Watch for our progress as there’s no stopping the Rotarians and the momentum at MOMS Green!

Victorian Tea Kits are a Hit!

More than 100 Tea Kits and $12,000 in donations later, we can report that our spring Victorian Tea Kit event was a big hit! Tea attendees enjoyed stopping in to pick up their kits and catch up with staff, while a flurry of deliveries got kits to those anticipating our Tea Month. Currently the tea is still flowing as tea parties continue in our offices, homes, and at Sojourner House residences! We are grateful to all participants, donors, and sponsored who continue to make this annual fundraiser possible.

Watch for news of our 19th Victorian Tea in April 2023!

Honor a Mom in Your Life

While we celebrate mothers every day at Sojourner House, we can’t overlook Mother’s Day itself on May 8.

Every year we ask our friends to remember the moms in their lives with a gift in their honor. Whether you choose to give in memory of a family member or friend, your donation in any amount makes a difference.
