A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

Three years ago, I could not have anticipated the impact the pandemic would have on IVYP. Like many nonprofits we struggled. We experienced COVID-related staffing shortages. Prior to the pandemic IVYP had 10 classrooms for children from 3 months to 5 years of age. At our lowest point, we had enough teachers for only 5 classrooms. But I’m so pleased that we have been able to reopen all but one classroom! I’m optimistic about being able to open that 10th classroom by June of this year. It feels great to be able to care for more children.

In addition to hiring many new teachers, we hired an amazing chef, Matthew! Having our own cook gives us more flexibility and allows us to be more efficient with our staff time. Matthew’s meals are so delicious! When he’s cooking in the morning, all the yummy smells waft through our Children’s Center. Our students are trying new food, eating more, and enjoying their meals so much more. Matthew responds to our teachers’ requests and tastes, so they feel supported and nurtured in their work. In my family, we joke that food equals love. I certainly express love through cooking.

This month all of our children celebrated Black history month by learning about Mae Jemison (see pictures below). Preparing food for our children and teachers, and celebrating our unique cultures are just a few of the important ways we care for our community.

I’m also excited to share that we have selected a new name for our organization! We are hard at work designing a logo and working on an official announcement. I know in my heart the wait has been worth it. Watch this space for news and updates.

I am feeling so much gratitude for these positive consequences, and I am so pleased with all that we were able to accomplish.

Staff Spotlight- Matthew Matta

This month, we are highlighting our Children's Center Multi-Skill Cook, Matthew Matta! Matthew ensures that all of our students receive a healthy, delicious, and nutritious breakfast and lunch each day of preschool.

"What I like most about my job is seeing all the smiles from the children, especially when I bring them their meals"

Celebrating Black History Month at the Children's Center

Black History Month is an important opportunity to teach our students about the contributions and experiences of Black individuals throughout history. Teaching about Black History Month can help children develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diversity of American culture and the experiences of Black people. This month, our students read “Mae Among the Stars,” written by Roda Ahmed. Inspired by the true story of Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to venture into space, the book teaches young readers to dream big and not to let others tell them it’s not possible.
Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try. This month we are highlighting Asparagus. Asparagus is a type of perennial flowering plant, meaning that same plant can grow back each year for over 20 years if properly cared for. These green spears are native to parts of West Asia, Northern Africa, and Europe. Asparagus is a highly nutritious vegetable low in calories and high in several important nutrients, including vitamins A, C, E, and K, folate, and potassium. This recipe is a perfect side dish, and adding asparagus to your diet is a great way to support your overall health and well-being.

Get Involved with IVYP
IVYP needs your support as we work hard to support our community. We’ve stepped up and we need your help to continue. Please consider a donation to IVYP’s General Donation Fund to help us continue to provide the caring, proactive and flexible support our community needs.
Be a diaper champion by sponsoring the cost of diapers for local families. Diapers are one of the most consistent requests from our families at our FRC. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $100 per month per baby so every contribution makes a big difference.
