A Note from our Executive Director
Dear friend,
Three years ago, I could not have anticipated the impact the pandemic would have on IVYP. Like many nonprofits we struggled. We experienced COVID-related staffing shortages. Prior to the pandemic IVYP had 10 classrooms for children from 3 months to 5 years of age. At our lowest point, we had enough teachers for only 5 classrooms. But I’m so pleased that we have been able to reopen all but one classroom! I’m optimistic about being able to open that 10th classroom by June of this year. It feels great to be able to care for more children.
In addition to hiring many new teachers, we hired an amazing chef, Matthew! Having our own cook gives us more flexibility and allows us to be more efficient with our staff time. Matthew’s meals are so delicious! When he’s cooking in the morning, all the yummy smells waft through our Children’s Center. Our students are trying new food, eating more, and enjoying their meals so much more. Matthew responds to our teachers’ requests and tastes, so they feel supported and nurtured in their work. In my family, we joke that food equals love. I certainly express love through cooking.
This month all of our children celebrated Black history month by learning about Mae Jemison (see pictures below). Preparing food for our children and teachers, and celebrating our unique cultures are just a few of the important ways we care for our community.
I’m also excited to share that we have selected a new name for our organization! We are hard at work designing a logo and working on an official announcement. I know in my heart the wait has been worth it. Watch this space for news and updates.
I am feeling so much gratitude for these positive consequences, and I am so pleased with all that we were able to accomplish.
