July 2023 Issue #1

Hello District 6400 Rotarians!

Happy Canada Day and Happy Independence Day.  As an international district, we are blessed to be able to share in international friendship on a regular basis.

I hope you are looking forward to the coming 12 months as we work to “Create Hope in the World;” RI President Gordon McInally’s theme for 2023-24. This is a wonderful theme that both captures what Rotarians do everyday with their service projects and is a call to action. Available on at the Rotary.org website President Gordon tells the story of how he came up with his theme and I highly recommend you watch it. While on a humanitarian service project in a region that had suffered a devastating natural disaster, he had a “Rotary moment”. Amid ruin all around, a woman having lost everything thanked him for Rotary’s presence and work that gave her hope.

It is too easy to forget the importance of our impact on our local, regional, and international communities. We help children learn the joy of reading, prevent and treat diseases, provide the means for sustainable livelihoods and opportunities, access to safe water and sanitation and peace. All the wonderful projects you are doing create hope. Whenever you are doing a service project, please stop and remember that you are changing the world, someone’s world. You are having a “Rotary Moment.”

Our district theme of “Be the One” is my call to action to you. Projects only happen because people step forward to lead their club, committee or project. The district and RI exist to support the clubs. “Be the One” to create hope in the world.

President Gordon points out that we cannot have peace without hope, hope for the future. This is especially true when it comes to peace within us. President Gordon is emphasizing the importance of mental health and eliminating the stigma of asking for help. Our district has a history of projects to improve mental health in our communities, particularly substance abuse and suicide. There will be more about this in the near future.

I hope you look forward to this coming year with the same enthusiasm as I.

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.” St. Teresa of Calcutta

Immediate Past District Governor Traci Sincock reflects on her year serving with Rotary International President Jennifer Jones

Master storyteller, kind heart, fearless spirit, champion of the marginalized, engaged listener and cheerleader, media expert, generous and compassionate soul, determined woman, dedicated daughter, sister, wife, and aunt. These words come to mind when I am asked to describe Rotary International President (now PRIP, Past Rotary International President), Jennifer Jones.

Members of Rotary District 6400, and the entire world witnessed history this past year, as a member of our own district and the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland elevated the Rotary International stage.

President Jennifer stepped up to the highest level of leadership in our organization, the first woman ever to hold that position. For those in our district that followed Jennifer and husband Nick’s travels to 57 countries and watched her meet with dozens of heads of states and world leaders, we’ve all had a front row seat to the impact of Rotary connection delivered by one of our own.

Speaking on behalf of our district, we are all filled with pride and joy watching President Jennifer in action at the breathtaking ceremonies with kings, prime ministers, and spiritual leaders; along with witnessing the many examples of her reaching out to comfort those in the most need of Rotary. 2022-2023 has been a year that Imagined Rotary in ways we never knew we could.

Serving as one of the 529 District Governors around the world during the 2022-23 Rotary year, I have been humbled and more than honored to represent President Jennifer to members of our district. The 53 clubs of District 6400 have created lasting impact through their service in the communities and their fellowship with each other. Watching clubs re-engage in service, try new ideas and practices has been inspiring and exciting. Clubs are working hard on creating equitable, welcoming environments and that action is translating to a slight increase in membership. Your commitment to Rotary is strong!

Thank you, President Jennifer for your inspiration, and thank you members of District 6400 for your support and encouragement. Together, we see a world where people unite and take action for lasting change – across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves.

Dearborn Scholarships

Celebrating 100 years of service in 2023, the Rotary Club of Dearborn continues its longstanding commitment to help students further their education. In May, the Dearborn Rotary Foundation awarded a record $73,700 to 27 students at a dinner celebration at Henry Ford College.

“Honoring these outstanding students along with meeting their family members, teachers and school officials, is truly a highlight of the year,” said Shannon Peterson, 2022-23 Dearborn Rotary co-president.

This year’s scholarships included 18 graduating high school seniors, four graduates of Henry Ford Early College (HFEC), two nursing students at Henry Ford College (HFC), and three veterans attending the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Dearborn Rotarian Angela Linder presented Otto Rowen awards to 15 students (see photo above) including Manolia Abbas, Fordson High School (HS) and Michael Berry Career Center (MBCC); Amber Barr, HFEC; Mya Hamood, Dearborn HS and Collegiate Academy; Emma Harrison, Edsel Ford HS and MBCC; Izabela Hausz, Edsel Ford HS; Yoseph Khazaal, Dearborn HS and MBCC; Angela Loredo, HFEC; Areeba Mirza, Edsel Ford HS and MBCC, Lea Nahli, HFEC; Olivia Noomie, Edsel Ford HS and MBCC; Angelina Reyes, Edsel Ford HS; Joshua Steinhebel, HFEC; Mark Struman, Dearborn HS and MBCC; Zeinab Virk, Edsel Ford HS and MBCC; and Amneh Yaghmour, Dearborn HS and MBCC.

Southgate Scholarships

The Southgate Rotary Club awarded four $1,000 scholarships to graduating Seniors in Southgate and Riverview at their June 15, 2023 meeting. L to R: Student winners are Nataly Georvassilis, Sophia Kandes, Nick Kowal, Emma Stay with President James Brown and Scholarship Committee Member, Chris Steves.

Emma will be attending the U of M Ann Arbor, Nataly will be attending trade school, Nick will be attending Holy Cross College and Sophia will be attending Eastern Michigan University.  These students were chosen after writing an essay on how they exemplify “Service Above Self”, which is the Rotary motto. Although all the applicants had impressive service to their school and community, these four students stood out and were awarded the scholarship. These scholarships are funded through proceeds from the State of the City Southgate and State of the City Riverview, which are held annually and sponsored by Southgate Rotary. We wish these students success as they start their post graduate studies and encourage them to continue to provide service to their communities.
