The June 2023 e-Grapevine

TRUSTEES CORNER

“Improvise, Adapt & Overcome.” This is a dictum our firefighters take to heart. As Trustees, we have the opportunity to speak with residents on a daily basis. The feedback we hear from them about our firefighters is undeviating. “The professionalism, politeness and display of genuine care is always evident in all that they do.” We hear this time and time again. The Concord Township fire department led by Chief Matt Sabo is undoubtedly very special!

As we prepare to open our new fire station this summer, we thought it appropriate to feature this team who has worked so very hard in subpar conditions for a long time and explore why despite these challenges, they consistently receive these type of reviews. When talking with Chief Sabo it is evident where this humble yet strong leadership and service attitude emanates. â€œIt is so humbling to be a part of this project. I am so very proud of our firefighters, fire prevention professionals and our support staff who work so hard each day to help us fulfill our mission and make sure our residents and businesses are safe.” Chief Sabo commented,”Empowering our firefighters with the tools to do their job is so important. We owe the community a debt of gratitude for recognizing and supporting this new station project. Our board has also been phenomenal in supporting us and allowing us to serve the community to the best of our ability. We treat everyone like family. Each call begs the question, ‘How would I treat my family member in this situation.’ We have a passion for what we do and hope it always shows.”

As for the progress—Chief Sabo noted, “We are cautiously optimistic that the station will be open for the August 12th, Pancake Breakfast that kicks off Concord Community Days. We plan to have a ribbon cutting and tours of the station so stay tuned for that! Currently, we are nearing completion of the administrative wing; and the dormitory area is approaching 60% completion.” Next will be the kitchen and dining areas. Much still needs to be done in the apparatus bay and our system needs to be brought online. The completion will be dependent on inspections, of course. If you drive by, you will see the exterior color. Not to worry! This is only primer. The final exterior will cover that color. Gutters and downspouts will be added soon to the exterior, while cabinets and countertops will be finished in the interior. Pinnacle Construction has filmed the construction progress from a drone. This footage will be available after the ribbon cutting.

The new space brings many advantages for the department to accomplish their work and serve the community. â€œHaving all equipment under one roof will help us to more effectively answer the call. Additionally, new community programs will be offered in the training areas such as babysitter, CPR, First Aid and more. We will now have fire prevention at the station which will allow us to collaborate more effectively to service both businesses and residents.” The new training room and conference room allows us to invest in our people. The department has done a great job of attracting and recruiting fire fighters.

The decontamination spaces ensure our firefighters and their families stay safe. In fact, the new decontamination areas are some of the best in the county with spaces dedicated for decontamination. The department has repurposed some furniture for spaces and saved money where they can.

“It is fitting, but not planned that the opening of the station coincides with the 75th Anniversary of the Concord Township Fire Department. Our hope is that this station will serve our community for another 100 years.” Chief also noted that “75th Anniversary” t-shirts will be available for purchase to benefit the Fire Fighters Association. Look for more information on that.

Chief Sabo also wants residents to know that the firefighters welcome visitors. They want to be viewed as the pillars of safety and security and be a part of the community. Please plan to stop in for visits once the station is officially opened!

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Have you ever wondered what the numbers seen on fire and rescue vehicles mean? Fire departments have developed a system of numeric “names” for their vehicles.  These numbers indicate which fire department the vehicles belong to, which fire station they are from and what type of vehicle they are. Having these common identifiers enables dispatchers and firefighters to communicate and work together more effectively. In 2021, we placed our newest ambulance, known as 1312, into service.   When our 1312 is responding to an accident, all responders listening to the radio know an ambulance is on its way:

When our 1325 is responding, all responders know an engine is on its way
