Blockchain, IoT and Machine Learning in Oil & Gas
Yes, it almost sounds like someone threw all the current buzzwords into the title of this conference, which will be held at the ARTS Hotel in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on February 13-14, 2018 (brrr...)

Claude Baudoin was selected by the organizers to chair the conference, which will feature a diverse group of speakers from O&G companies, service companies, suppliers, consultants, and academics in a single-track program. You can find the full agenda here.

Webinar: Practical Guide to Cloud Computing v3.0
The Cloud Standards Customer Council (CSCC) has finished and released version 3 of its Practical Guide to Cloud Computing, first published at the end of 2011, just a few months after the creation of the Council. Like all CSCC publications, this new version is freely available here.

On December 19 at 11:00 a.m. EST (8:00 a.m. PST, 1600 GMT) the main contributors to this revision will explain the changes and the new content outline in a free webinar. Register here.
Data Residency Maturity Model
The Object Management Group approved on December 7 a new white paper (OMG calls them Discussion Papers) proposing a five-level maturity model, inspired by the original software engineering maturity model from Carnegie-Mellon University, to help assess the ability of an organization to manage the risks and issues related to the storage and movement of information across countries and jurisdictional boundaries.

You can download the paper and send us comments (Claude Baudoin is the editor). We're currently exploring avenues to give this model more exposure by collaborating with other institutions. It has also become clear, through discussions at the last OMG meeting, that the next step may be the development of a standard for a formal representation of laws and regulations affecting data residency.

There will be a half-day tutorial on this subject, followed by a half-day working meeting on how to proceed with such a standard, at the next OMG meeting in Reston, Virginia, probably on Tuesday, March 20. Stay tuned for registration instructions in January!
Upcoming IT and Software Conferences
The Eleventh ACM International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining (WSDM 2018), February 5-9, Marina Del Rey, Calif. This year's WSDM includes a day devoted to interaction between the search and data mining communities and the venture capital and Industry communities.

Software Technology for Blockchains, Bitcoin and Distributed Trust Systems -- LASER 2018. This 14th edition of the LASER Foundation's Summer School of Software Engineering will as usual take place on the island of Elba, off the coast of Italy. The dates are June 2-10, 2018. From the conference announcement:
"The combination of advances in distributed systems and cryptography is bringing about a revolution not only in finance, with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, but in many other fields whose list keeps growing. The LASER 2018 summer school brings the best experts in the field, from both industry and academia, to provide an in-depth exploration of the fascinating software issues and solutions behind these breakthrough technology advances."
Hilton's Connected Room
At what point do you decide that there it's easier to move the setting on a thermostat manually rather than logging in to your room control system from your smartphone? We're about to find out with the Hilton Connected Room concept. The idea is that users of the hotel chain's loyalty app will be able to control many aspects of their room from their smartphone, including connecting their streaming account to the room TV. Note to the Hilton marketing department: if you're just trying to take a shower and sleep, there's not an app for that.
