Abby Sachs-Overton
After five years of service to the Old Baldy Foundation, Development and Communications Coordinator Abby Overton is departing as she takes the next step in her career. Abby joined the Old Baldy team in 2017 and helped support the Foundation through a banner year celebrating the 200th birthday of the lighthouse.
While many community members and Old Baldy supporters have gotten to know Abby over the years, she excelled at setting the Foundation up for success from behind the computer screen. Since she started, Abby has designed and built a comprehensive website that supports all of our virtual programs and offerings. Some readers may remember the days when you had to stop into the Keeper's Cottage to make a donation or register for the 4th of July Golf Cart parade. Abby helped modernize our operations, so you can interact with Old Baldy from afar. In addition, she left her mark on our ability to share the stories spanning four centuries of history of Bald Head Island through social media, blog posts, video content and more. As the Old Baldy Foundation continues to grow, we are thankful for the groundwork Abby created to communicate our mission with the community.
All staff goodbyes are bittersweet, but we are proud to see her work at the Old Baldy Foundation set her up to move to a well regarded institution. She will serve as the Digital Communications Associate at Population Services International, an organization that works to provide health services and products in over fifty countries.

Upcoming: June Historic Happy exlploring women Lighthouse Keepers!
June 22nd 5:30 PM
Our next Historic Happy Hour of 2022 will be on Wednesday, June 22nd at 5:30 pm on the Old Baldy grounds. Tickets at $15 and include beer and wine. Please bring beach chairs and blankets for seating. Read on to learn about the subject for our next happy hour:
John Thomas, lighthouse keeper for Gurnet Point Light Station, was in command of a Continental army in Canada when he died of smallpox in 1776. In 1806 on Bald Head Island Joseph Swain fatally, and unintentionally, shot lighthouse keeper Henry Long whilst they were out hunting for boars or deer. In 1817 Stephen Tomlinson Moore suffered a fall aboard a ship that left him unable perform his duties as the Black Rock Harbor Light Station lightkeeper. Regardless of the unfortunate circumstances that fell upon these lighthouse keepers, the lighthouses they were in charge of continued to function. Who picked up the wick whence the men went down? In each of those cases, and many others, it was a woman close to the keeper. Indeed, the lives of Hannah Thomas, Rebecca Long, and Catherine Moore, the wives and daughter of the aforementioned keepers, as well as other woman lighthouse keepers, will be discussed at this months happy hour.

Join us as we discuss The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter
Ida Lewis was born in Newport, Rhode Island, on February 25, 1842.Her father, Captain Hosea Lewis, was appointed keeper of Line Rock Light in Newport in 1854, and moved his family to Lime Rock I. 1857. A few months later, he suffered a debilitating stroke and 15-year-old Ida took over his duties. She tended the light while her mother cared for Captain Lewis and Ida’s invalid younger sister.
A strong swimmer and skilled oarswoman, Ida made her first rescue at 12 years old, saving four men whose boat capsized. During her 54 years living on Lime Rock, She saved at least 18 lives, becoming famous. Newspapers published thrilling stories of Ida’s rescues, music was composed in her honor, and merchandise with her name and image was sold. She also received thousands of visitors each year, including President U.S. Grant, General Sherman, and Admiral Dewey. Ida was presented with medals, pensions, and a custom-made mahogany rowboat. Despite, or because, of her fame, Ida’s life was not an entirely happy one. Join us throughout June as we discuss the fate of The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter and look at other women lighthouse keepers, including our own unofficial keeper Rebecca Long.
