Pictured here are the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center soon after completion back in October of 1975. New York City was on the verge of bankruptcy around this time and the World Trade Center sat largely vacant, as you can see two homeless men are squatting on the lot.
The Twin Towers became the centerpieces of the World Trade Center complex. Standing at a majestic 110 stories each, they provided 10-million-square feet of office space. But the twin towers were more than just office buildings. Because they were built at a time when the city's future was uncertain, these towers renewed hope, housed businesses, they gave the people confidence and stopped lower Manhattan's rapid decline. International stars headline
Impromptu Classical Concerts' 2019 season

Some of the biggest names in classical music will shine brightly during the 2019 season of Impromptu Classical Concerts.
From solo organists and violinists, to piano duos, string quartets and more, this stellar season promises to be one of the most successful yet for the concert series, the oldest such showcase in Key West, having been founded in 1972.
Fresh from its highly successful 2018 season, which was a tribute to the centenary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, (a frequent visitor to the Southernmost City,) Impromptu's '19 season gets underway on Jan. 13, with acclaimed organist  Chaz Bowers , who will perform to rededicate the magnificent St. Paul's Church organ after 30 years of additions and renovations. .
As a classical organist and improvisational artist, Bowers has delighted audiences from his native Western Pennsylvania to the shores of Bermuda with masterful performances of favorites from the canon of great organ literature.
All Impromptu performances take place at 4 p.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 401 Duval St.
Tickets cost $20 at the door, on the day of the show, with all students being admitted free of charge.  Season tickets are available, as are sponsorship opportunities.

  Part 20 of Groovy History's " A Look Back at the 60's & 70's Through Photographs"

Pictured here is Tim Curry as Frank N' Furter, Patricia Quinn as Magenta, and Nell Campbell as Columbia in 1975's The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Rocky Horror is best described as a musical horror comedy. Initially, it didn't do so well, but as a midnight picture, it grew its own cult following and soon became a cultural phenomenon in both the U.S. and U.K.
In 2016 a tribute to the cult classic film was released. The film titled,  The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again, premiered on the Fox network October 20, 2016 and received heaps of negative reviews from critics and audiences alike. That's what happens when you try to re-imagine cult classics folks! PINTEREST

This lively young group - a few of whom, look like they may be playing hooky- are lounging about and dancing to Rock n' Roll on the quays of Paris in the middle of the day. This photograph was taken by Paul Almasy, who was a pioneer of photojournalism. He left his native Hungary and spent six decades traveling around the globe amassing approximately 120,000 photos such as this one. His work is an exceptionally detailed archive of 20th century history. PINTREST
When the first phone lines started to go up, not everyone was so happy about it. Some people, especially farmers and those who were very religious, believed they were evil. More specifically that evil could travel through them and get into their homes. They were dubbed the 'devil's wires' by many and in some areas local farmers would go out at night after work crews left and pull them back down.
People in rural Sweden feared phones would draw evil spirits to their homes and that the wires could cause them to be struck by lightning. The Amish also agreed the telephone was up to no good. As a religious community, separation from the sins of the outside world is part of their moral code and they felt the telephone (and its wires) was a gateway that would allow Satan to sneak into their homes.

Roller skating spawned quite a few subcultures besides the roller discos of the 1970s. The more athletic application of roller skating was Roller Derby. Roller Derby gained in popularity after Raquel Welch starred in a docudrama about it called "The Kansas City Bomber." Skate-fashion of the '70s and '80s was loud to say the least, especially on most Roller Derby teams. Colorful mix-matched socks, bright tights, giant earrings, and crop-tops filled the skate rinks. Although nothing topped the lovely ladies on the floor sporting leotards and leg warmers like they were getting ready to aerobicise with Jane Fonda.

In 1977, Prince was just a 19-year-old kid in the midst of recording his first album when photographer Robert Whitman was brought in to take his first professional set of photos. Only 15 copies of the original press kit were ever produced. Since then, Prince went on to become a musical innovator, integrating various styles like funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, psychedelia, and pop. His undeniable musical talents paired with his wide vocal range and his flamboyant stage presence made him a pop-culture phenomenon. Prince is one of the best-selling artist of all time with over 100 million records worldwide. Over the course of his career he won seven Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award for his film Purple Rain. In 2004, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Pictured here is the interior of a cabin of the RMS Titanic. In addition to sleeping in a gorgeous room, those traveling in first class had luxuries such as; a gym, squash court, and a seven-foot-deep salt water swimming pool. They had a steam room, massage parlor, and of course an amazing, five-star restaurant and Parisian style cafe, and a bistro with an ocean view.   She was a beauty, brimming with all the luxuries a person could want. When the RMS Titanic set out on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, no one could have foreseen the tragic turn of events that would ultimately lead to the deaths of 1,503 people aboard.

Pictured here is former President Harry Truman settled in the back of the Presidential Limousine with his successor, President Elect, Dwight Eisenhower. They were leaving the White House heading for the Capitol for Eisenhower's inauguration ceremony on January 20, 1953.  Prior to this seemingly cheery moment, a tea ceremony was supposed to take place, but didn't. President Harry S. Truman and his wife Bess sat in the Red Room waiting for the customary meeting with Dwight David Eisenhower and his wife Mamie to join them. It was no secret that Eisenhower and Truman clashed over foreign policy and how the Korean War should be handled, but to when Eisenhower's limo pulled up, he simply refused enter the White House and join them. In turn, Truman didn't want to join Eisenhower on the historic limo ride but eventually gave in, but he never forgave Eisenhower for snubbing the tea, he took it as a personal slight to Mrs. Truman.
Coca Cola first began officially marketing in France back in 1950. Pictured here are some men trying the fizzy beverage for the first time. Many Parisians just weren't as into it as Americans.Coca-Cola had already been available in France since 1919 but in an unofficial capacity. It wasn't until after the war and the increase in refrigerators found in French homes that Coke decided to really market. Vans toured the streets handing out samples in what Coke now calls "La révolution du froid" (The cold revolution).

The Key West Tropical Forest is partnering with The Studios of Key West which is hosting the "Tom Majors Wood Art Invitational". This is a month-long, island-wide celebration that will be held in March, 2019.  It will showcase the creative potential of wood, and by extension, a statement of faith that the intersection of humankind and nature needn't be disastrous, but can result in objects and experiences filled with beauty and meaning. The Studios of Key West, in addition to serving as the hub for the invitational, will host "With the Grain", an exhibition of contemporary wood artists from across the country.

Part 20 Continues  "Groovy History's"  A Look Back at the 60's & 70's Through Photographs

Pictured here is the legendary slapstick team known as The Three Stooges, out of character, Moe Howard's real name was Moses Horwitz. Larry Fine was born Louis Fienberg, Curly Howard's real name was Jerome Lester Horwitz.
The Three Stooges were an American vaudeville and comedy team between 1928 and 1970. They rose to fame during the Great Depression and are still considered  one of the most popular comedy acts of the 20th century. The Great Depression was the darkest time in American history and the Stooges was able to help people crack a smile even though the  world was falling deeper into despair.
Aside from his obvious musical genius, singer Elton John has always been famous for his insanely, over the top wardrobe choices for his performances. Here he is, sometime around 1984 in one of his more gloriously ridiculous ensembles complete with a wildly embellished headpiece.
In his five-decade career Sir Elton John has sold more than a staggering 300 million records. He has over fifty Top 40 hits, including seven consecutive No. 1 US albums, He is one of the best-selling music artists in the world. He's composed film scores and his music has graced the Broadway stage as well as Royal events, including Princes Diana's funeral.
After having been named an Order of the British Empire in 1996, John was later made a Knight Bachelor by Elizabeth II in 1998 for his services to music and to charitable causes.  Believe it or not, this is how little GenX ers watched the solar eclipse of February 26, 1979. They made themselves little robot helmets from boxes or brown paper bags and took a stroll outside to view the eclipse and greet the Martians in style.

Key West Art & Historical Society invites public to embark on a virtual journey aboard Flagler's Overseas Railway

A year after Key West Art & Historical Society unveiled a newly renovated "Overseas to the Keys: Henry Flagler's Overseas Railway" permanent exhibit at the Custom House Museum, its virtual counterpart is now available to researchers, students, historians, history buffs, and Flagler fans all over the world.  The Society's new online exhibit, "Henry Flagler's Overseas Railway Timeline," is a multi-media experience created by Annette Liggett, Brewster Chamberlin, and Society Curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D. that details the construction process of the engineering feat that joined mainland Florida to Key West in 1912. Visit  kwahs.org/education/overseas-railway-timeline to explore the "Eight Wonder of the World," and check back for additional related online features and downloadable curriculum that will be launched over the coming six months. Key West Art & Historical Society presents "Art & Puns: The Whimsy of Ferron Bell" exhibit at Custom House Museum

Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates the legacy of one of the island's most clever visual artists with "Art & Puns: The Whimsy of Ferron Bell" in the Bumpus Gallery of the Custom House Museum located at 281 Front Street.  The exhibit runs through February 10, 2019.  The exhibit spotlights the quirky late artist's trademark visual wit and whimsy, featuring  work from private Key West collectors, personal photographs, and newspaper clippings about the unique personality  widely known for his  off-the-wall and humorous creations.

A self-taught artist,  Thomas Ferron Bell began his career at the age of 16 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, moved to Fire Island Pines, New York when he was 21, later splitting his time and talents between there and Key West, Florida. Bell worked full time as an artist, cultivating his audience and frequently bartering and donating his work to fundraisers in the Key West community.

HISTORIC KEY WEST CEMETERY STROLL, JANUARY 26, 2018

The first Cemetery Stroll to be offered at the Historic Key West Cemetery this season will take place on Saturday January 26th. During the stroll, small groups of visitors will be escorted to gravesites where interpreters will tell the stories of the deceased in brief monologues. The groups are scheduled for departures at 9:30, 9:50, and 10:10 Reservations are necessary, and can be made by calling 305-304-1453.   Among the gravesites to be visited are those of Frank Booth. Charles DuPont, William Kerr, Thomas Romer, the Los Martires de Cuba, the Figueredo plot; the Benjamin Albury family restoration, and the USS Maine plot.

The tour will take approximately 90 minutes. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and plan to walk over a mile on uneven ground. Bottled water will be provided.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn first-hand about some of the fascinating people who have given Key West its colorful and significant character. Space is limited for the tours and pre-registration is required. A donation of $20 (cash or check) per person to the Historic Florida Keys Foundation is recommended with all proceeds devoted to cemetery restoration.  Participants should enter the cemetery by either the Windsor Street or Frances Street gate and go to the registration table on 2 nd  Ave..   Additional strolls featuring other gravesites will take place on February 23th and March 23th.
In the photo: City Commissioner Clayton Lopez often services as one of the escorts on the strolls.
