Liza Jane Catana Releases her First Commercial National EP "Alone in a Crowd"

Click this Video Link to Watch the 3:58 Minute Lead Video from the EP
LIZA1
Click this Video Link to Order the EP with Special Price ($4.95) through this Feature : LIZA2

Growing up in Key West, Liza Jane marched to the beat of her own drummer, even if that meant she didn't always fit in. Blessed with a voice that's been finely honed through years of coaching and performance, Liza Jane has channeled the universally relatable struggles and anxieties of youth into a satisfyingly provocative musical package.
The music on her head turning debut EP "Alone in a Crowd" is profoundly confessional, propelled by subtle atmospheric production traits and Liza Jane's stand out vocal performance. She incorporates the soulfulness of Alicia Keys, the brashness of Fiona Apple, the icy cool of Lana Del Rey, and the booming power of Adele to create something entirely her own. These are moody songs that slink and soar and groove and glide. The EP features production from British music veteran Simon Edwards (Michael Jackson, David Grey).

Liza Jane Catana and Nina Newton Played the Little Room Jazz Club Last Sunday 9/8 to a Packed House & with an Encore Performance Next Sunday 9/15 5:30p to 7pm 821 Duval St. 305-741-7515

First Play of the 2019 / 2020 Season
"TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS"

Dec 10, 2019 - Jan 4, 2020

Based on the book by Cheryl Strayed. Adapted by Nia Vardalos.

Directed By: Joy Hawkins

A struggling writer takes over as an online advice columnist who admits she doesn't have all the answers but mines her own mistakes to empathically respond to dilemmas that are at the heart of being human. The play was based on the best-selling book by Cheryl Strayed of "Wild" fame (a book and movie starring Reese Witherspoon) and was originally directed by Thomas Kail, the director of Hamilton. Tiny Beautiful Things is a luminous play about reaching when you're stuck, healing when you're broken and finding the courage and humor to take on the questions which sometimes have no answers.

The College of the Florida Keys invites community to "CFK Poetics: A Visiting Poets Series"

The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) invites the community to CFK Poetics: A Visiting Poets Series comprised of three events.  The series kicks off with open mic poetry on September 18 at 6 p.m. in the Library on the Key West Campus.  The College will host two evening events with esteemed poets B.H. Fairchild, on September 19 at 6 p.m., and Chelsea Rathburn, on October 9 at 6 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre on the Key West Campus.  All events are free and open to the public.

CFK Poetics is made possible through the support of the Florida Humanities Council. The goal of this series is to connect the Florida Keys community and CFK students with poets whose work illustrates the critical intersections and changing landscapes and examines the social, psychological, and environmental changes that working-class residents in a tourist destination can identify with and by which they can be inspired.

This Year we Published a Few Multi-Part / Multi-Week Features from The Groovy History Editors ...They have an amazing Photo Inventory (Thousands) All with Brief Commentaries. WWW.GROOVYHISTORY.COM  They Recently Ran one of their "Remembering the Good Times"; and Next Week's Issue will have about 15 Photos. Here is just One..

If walls could talk! Billy Idol, Sam Kinison, Madonna and David Bowie sharing a joke. (1984)

If these walls could talk they'd probably have some eye bulging, jaw-dropping conversations to share. The music industry's top innovative superstars of the time are here partying with standup comedian "Sam" Kinison, who was known for his intensely harsh sense of humor.
According to Billy Idol's biography  Dancing With Myself, this photo was taken after the HBO Young Comedian Special back in 1984. According to Idol, this was the evening that spawned his friendship with Sam. Idol pointed out that at this time, Sam was heavily into coke and "was beginning to act more like a rockstar than a comedian." No doubt this was a crazy night for all of them.
I MAY PUSH BACK THE NEXT ISSUE (Originally Scheduled for SEPT. 16 : 2nd Issue of New Season) to Sept 23; since I'm writing this at 1pm on Tuesday 9/10 and I still have a few Hrs before Publishing this 9/9 Issue.

Very excited to share the progress with the #STEM program at the Florida Sea Base in Summerland Key. Here the Boy Scouts of America are showcasing coral restoration while visiting the waterfront facility. Today, I got to work with the staff and interns performing micro fragmentation techniques to prepare corals for the tanks. We began a few months ago building the facility and have come so far. With these new corals, and knowledge, the team here can teach the campers at this facility about coral restoration with hands on experiences. Programs like the one at the site, and partnerships with amazing groups like the Boy Scouts of America are how we will be able to turn the tide of our oceans.

In mid-June, a group of watercolor enthusiasts met each night at the beach, just before sunset, with paints, brushes and open imaginations. Led by beloved Key West-New York artist Susan Sugar, the students learned new ways of observing the ephemeral shapes and transitory moods of the evening sky.  Having originally trained as dancer, Sugar's work is deeply influenced by movement, and her paintings are imbued with a sense of musicality and rhythm. A selection of student watercolors will be shown alongside one of Susan's own in the Sanger Gallery.

The exhibition features work by the "Solstice Sisters" Elizabeth Chamberlain, Cricket Desmarais, Natalia Duke, Elizabeth Hanes, Frances Lee Larkin, Kathy Letarte, Colleen McIntyre, Marcy Moyer, Morgan Ridler, Robin Robinson, Susan Seroskie, Emma Starr, and Rita Troxel.

Now The Jon McIntosh Restoration Project
On view to the public is a restoration project of a large-scale wooden sculpture by the beloved community member, Jon McIntosh. "Tosh" was a renowned designer, illustrator, and painter, and beloved member of the island arts community. Tosh was an accomplished sculptor as well, and his 15-foot-tall palm-tree pencil sculpture was one of the standouts of the 2011 Sculpture Key West exhibit at Fort Zachary Taylor.

Working on a mostly volunteer basis, local sculptor Craig Gray will restore the palm-tree pencil sculpture, and plans to bring it back to its original glory over the next few months. Having first met Tosh at The Studios of Key West in 2011, Gray quickly grew close to the fellow sculptor, and considered him a good friend and mentor. The Studios of Key West is pleased to host the first stage of the sculpture's restoration this summer, allowing the public an opportunity to see a part of the process. Materials for the restoration of the sculpture will be purchased by a Special Project Grant from the Florida Keys Council of the Arts.

Drye will discuss how he originally came to write about the 1935 hurricane, the people he met in the course of his research, and the hurricane itself. He will also present his newly released "Storm of the Century: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 - Revised Edition," updated with additional details about the hurricane of 1935, along with a new chapter devoted entirely to Hurricane Irma, which struck the Keys in 2017.  I have my Ticket; Thanks for the Book Willie.

Willie Drye will be discussing the new edition of his classic book,
Storm of the Century: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935
and signing copies on September 26 at the Customs House Museum in Key West. The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore has this to say about it: "A scenario similar to the 1935 hurricane is one of my biggest fears as a forecaster today. This is a haunting and very possible scenario in coastal areas that have seen exponential growth since this monster. Willie Drye's book relives that 1935 horror and reminds us how breathtaking and unforgiving paradise can be."

Storm of the Century
is considered the definitive story of what is still the most powerful hurricane to make U.S. landfall. The revised and expanded edition includes new information about the hurricane and the people who were caught in it and a new chapter about Hurricane Irma. The Labor Day hurricane's 200 mph winds and 20-foot storm surge devastated the Upper Keys on September 2, 1935, killing more than 400 people, including about 260 World War I veterans living in beachfront work camps and working on a construction project. Advance tickets for Drye's presentation are recommended, and can be obtained from the

Sponsored by the Helmerich Trust, Marriot Beachside Hotel, and the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, early ticket purchase is recommended.  Distinguished Speaker Series presentation tickets are $5 for KWAHS members, $10 for non-members, and are available at  kwahs.org , click 'tickets.'      Your Museums.  Your Community.  It takes an Island.

JUST IN : Key West City Commissioner Clayton Lopez and Chairperson Patrician Eables are hosting a District VI community meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 12that the Martin Luther King Community Center at 300 Catherine Street. Topics will include updates on the Mall on Duval, the Douglass Gym expansion the Truman Waterfront Park and more.

We were between Summer Hiatus Issues when Alyson Sent This (Below) ; So Saved it for This Issue.
Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission cut the ribbon on the new Dockmaster facility at Garrison Bight.
The new facility offers boaters new restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. The new building also houses a maintenance shop as well as the Dockmaster's office.
This $1.2 million dollar project was funded in part by a boating infrastructure improvement grant from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Mayor Teri Johnston and the Key West City Commission have proclaimed this week as National Suicide Prevention Week.  Monroe County had the highest rate of suicide in 2018 of all 67 counties in Florida, Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover pointed out. Suicide is the 10 th  leading cause of death in the United States, and the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 15 and 34.
Additionally, suicide is the only leading cause of death in the United States that has increased every year for the past decade.  Hoover noted that State Representative Holly Raschein is working to secure more state resources to provide better suicide awareness "on our little island." She encouraged the community to become involved by participating in the upcoming Out of the Darkness Walk later this year.
"Organizations such as the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention envision a world without suicide," reads the proclamation, "and are dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide through research, education, advocacy and resources for those who have lost someone or who personally struggle."

Here is an Article from Last Month for Insertion this Week
New Key West Farmers Market Opens August 1 at Truman Waterfront

On July 16 the Key West City Council approved a weekly Farmers Market at Truman Waterfront. The decision came after new organizers came forward to fill the void left by the abrupt departure of the Green Market at Bayview Park. Jill Snodgrass and Sean Krikorian, owners of the event firm Daily Plan-it, already organize the popular seasonal Key West Artisan Market at Higgs Beach so it was a natural fit. "We feature many of the same vendors who came to us expressing a need and desire to continue serving the people of Key West," Krikorian explained. "Many of them participate in a market almost every day somewhere in the keys, so missing an option on Thursdays left a void for them as well as the patrons."  The Truman Waterfront Advisory Board reached out to encourage selection of that recently renovated area as the new location and both vendors and organizers agreed it is a perfect choice.

The new event will begin August 1 and continue every Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm. The show will feature produce sold by the Homestead farmer who grows it, Rosie, the famous cheese lady, orchids and native plants, pickles, honey, handcrafted items and other specialties. Organizers are applying to make the show EBT/SNAP friendly so affordable fresh food will be available to more people. Working locals are urged to take advantage of the many prepared items and stop at the market during their lunch break to enjoy a seaside picnic while they shop. Parking is plentiful and free with a resident parking permit. Visitors are encouraged to use the free pink Duval Loop Bus which stops close by. The new splash park and tours of the Ingham are also available in the park.

"When the Green Market closed many locals were very vocal about wanting a farmers market option in their backyard." Krikorian said, "We hope everyone shows up to support this and helps make sure its sustainable."

GRACY@KEYSDIGINET.COM Gracy Lozano Byrne
Gracy sends regards and tells us : This website was created to make easier to event goers to find times and dates. Companies can save time and always have updated/available events available to them and their customers. They don't have to search every local news paper to find what they need. They have ready and combined information on one calendar. It's also online and therefore very convenient. Most people are digital nowadays. Another selling point is that the calendar of events will provide useful information that can be used for scheduling. Any company who is having a special event can look at the global calendar and avoid clashing times/dates with other organizations. This also allows them to attract more people to their events by scheduling their own events when other organizations aren't scheduled.

Key West Art & Historical Society Invites Public to Experience Free Key West Historic Marker Tours

Key West Art & Historical Society invites locals and tourists to experience a multi-platform, self-guided, and free tour program of Key West's historic sites designed to highlight the island's unique multi-cultural history and heritage through the Key West Historic Marker Tours website and phone app.

Originally designed and launched by Bruce Neff under the auspices of Key West Historic Markers Inc., the program merged with Key West Art & Historical Society in 2018 and consists of three primary elements: a map of cultural and museum attractions featuring 121 historic location markers that pay tribute to Key West's colorful past, phone apps that act as a personal museum docent to support those taking the self-led walking tours, and a comprehensive website at  KWHMT.org that provides a virtual tour of Key West, historic background and community information, digital collections of local postcards and cigar box art, and links to Google maps.

Key West has one of the largest historic districts with the densest amassing of historic frame vernacular buildings in the country. The island's history encompasses unique architecture, Civil War forts, famous authors' homes, connection to wars and revolutions, once-thriving turtle and sponging industries, sunken treasure galleons, slave ships, Flagler's railroad, boom and bust economies, and much more.

To plan your own tour, visit the Key West Historic Marker Tour website at KWHMT.org, download the free Key West Historic Marker Tour phone app at  keywest.oncell.com, or call 305-507-0300 for a free Key West "Voices of History" phone tour. For more information, contact curator Cori Convertito, Ph.D., at 305-295-6616 x112.
